Today marks the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the 21st amendment, which repealed prohibition! And just to rub it in the face of all of those righteous teetotalers out there, I'd like to point out that our society has not crumbled beneath the weight of unbridled drunkenness.

Personally, I celebrate the repeal of prohibition every day, but I understand there are those who aren't as celebratory as I am. So, here is yet another fine excuse for you to imbibe, if you weren't already planning to do so on your Friday night.

We've come a long way in the last 75 years, and I'm particularly proud to see our little city leading the way into the new era of micro-distilling and creative cocktailing. Honestly, we have some of the most astounding distillers and bartenders in this town and I'm incredibly happy to be among the lucky few documenting the boozy scene.

But you know what I'm most excited about? I'm excited about the repeal day celebration at the Teardrop Cocktail Lounge. I just spoke to part owner Daniel Shoemaker who said they'd be offering a special secret all-classic pre-prohibition cocktail menu for tonight only. To top it off, the numerous cocktails on said menu are going to be $5 all night long!

There is a catch: in order to see that menu, you need to know the password. And in order to get the password, you'll need to e-mail Daniel before 4pm today.

One of the best things about pre-prohibition cocktails are their simplicity—often just three ingredients working in perfect harmony. One of my favorites is the Manhattan. Here's the recipe from the Museum of the American Cocktail Pocket Recipe Guide compiled and edited by Robert Hess and Anistatia Miller:

1.5 oz rye (or bourbon) whiskey
0.5 oz sweet vermouth
1 dash angostura bitters

Stir with ice. Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry or lemon twist.

If you've never had a Manhattan made right, you are missing out. I'm not sure if this is one of the cocktails they'll be pouring at the Teardrop tonight, but I'm sure you can talk them into making you one. Pure liquid artistry.

So, happy repeal day! Drink up, drinkers!
