The Mercury's City Hall Bureau

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 12:28 PM

As I've mentioned before, the Mercury doesn't have a fancy pants office at City Hall, like certain other papers do (*cough*Oregonian*cough*). But I've got a pile of meetings to attend here today—like the first meeting of the task force that'll evaluate the proposed PGE Park renovations and new minor league baseball stadium idea (check back here at 4 pm for a joint liveblog with me and Mark Evans).

But it's deadline day, too. So I've set up shop on a bench on the third floor, in a hall leading to the mayor's office "emergency exit only" door. Traffic here is low. So low, that this hall is where old office chairs go to die, apparently.

This is also the hall, I've discovered, where city hall's thermostat resides. Fun fact about city hall: The temp here is set to 69 degrees. Compared to the 67 degree compromise temp we've established at home (I'd like it to be higher), and the drafty Mercury office, it's balmy here. I may never leave.

Those are nice. I snagged one from the courthouse during a earthquake drill back in the 1970s.

Update: A mayoral staffer passing by told me the chairs are still wanted and loved. They're just temporary in the hall due to the "pandemonium" in the mayor's office, as walls are repainted and carpet replaced, for the incoming administration.
