Snip, Snip... No More Internet

Posted by Eli Sanders on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 11:09 AM

Bad news for our readers in Egypt:

CAIRO, Egypt - Egypt's communications ministry says Internet cables in the Mediterranean Sea have been cut, causing massive Internet outages.

The ministry says three Internet cables running through the Mediterranean were cut Friday morning. Throughout the country the Internet is almost completely down or working sporadically.

A reminder that we're all but a few snips of a cable away from returning to the pre-Internet darkness.

This happened a few months ago to other Arab nations didn't it? I remember reading about this unsolved mystery of severed undersea cables crippling communications back at the beginning of the year.

Plus Russia downed Georgia's internet before they invaded.

Will 2009 be the year of global virtual terrorism?

This is some crazy clandestine shit that will star Keefer Sutherland in a wet suit for sure.
