Portable Bike Lanes—Now with LASERS!

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Sure, Portland has a shit-ton of bike lanes. BUT THEY'RE NOT EVERYWHERE. Now Altitude Inc. has developed Light Lane— a system which projects a virtual bike lane around your cycle to fool drivers into not running over your ass. LASERS! BIKES! Oh, the myriad of evil applications. Check out more here!

sure it looks cool and all, but really this only helps pedestrians, other cyclists and SUVs without their lights on to see you.

i'll take a couple of blinkies over lasers any day.

kungfu, laser-encrusted helmets are actually pretty expensive these days. I'll be interested to see what happens, though, once Obama's stimulus package goes through.

I got a good alternative to laser bike lanes--how about riding on the dedicated cycling streets. Is there really any need to ride down say, Division, during rush hour when mostly car-free Clinton is a mere block away?

@Jake. I have a special hatred for people who bike on SE 39th Ave. At least Division has a semblence of a shoulder lane.

@ jake & Graham: WORD.

And could pedestrians get a crosswalk laser? Then there would never be any more jaywalking, ever!

Great if the cyclist stays to the side of the road. I'm a cyclist myself but witness no end of asshole bikers who think they own the road and would have their own private bike lane right down the middle of the street.
