There is Support Out There for Sam Adams

Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 10:58 AM

The Support Sam Adams page on Facebook currently has 436 members. Who'd like to be #437?

Also, some advice for Sam Adams: Get the hell out of your house and go to work. Borrow a page from Bill Clinton—who blew a presidential load on a White House intern—and go do your job. The media pronounced Clinton politically dead, insisted that he had to resign, that there was nothing else he could do, the media Clinton couldn't possibly be an effective president after the public learned about the blue dress and the cigars and analingus in the Oval Office. But the public wasn't as prudish or vindictive as the media insisted. People saw Clinton doing his job, people contemplated the sexual mistakes they themselves had made, and they backed Clinton.

You've already apologized for having consensual sex with an adult, you've apologized for lying. It's time to be done apologizing. Go to work. Tough it out. Face 'em down.

I agree. The investigation will take its course, and presumably have a legit conclusion which we can all understand.

Clearly this is a disappointment, a setback.

But Portland is in need of clear, progressive leadership - right now. We voted for Sam for this reason, and, here's my point, there is no one waiting in the wings with the smarts to move this city in the forwardly direction.

The next years are going to be a huge challenge. Our economy will be rocky. There's a huge turnover in careers coming. And there are opportunities at stake - Vestas, PCC expansion, more alt-tech and more creative capacity.

Today Sam's lost our explicit trust. He has some soul searching to do (and I suggest a brief sabbatical, Sam). But Sam has the capacity to lead this city where we collectively want to go. That trust needs to be regained, and that's on his shoulders. But to simply toss Sam aside for sheer pillage is foolish and shortsighted.

I agree too! He's apologized for lying, and I accept that. Like you said, he doesn't need to apologize for having consensual sex with another adult, but... This whole, Amy Ruiz thing? If he really did give her a hush job, he should resign!

Has he apologized yet for his righteous indignation, denials, cries of homophobia, and smear campaign against Bob Ball?

It was Bob Ball who waded into the muck. What was the point of him needing to bring the whole thing up? What business is it of ours or anyone else's who the mayor is sleeping with?

I'm devastated, disgusted--but I don't think it's disqualifying. I support his continued Mayoralty:

You're damn right there is still support. A lot of us still think Sam can be an amazing mayor and don't see this as a big deal at all.

For me it's not about the sexual liason, assuming the kid really was 18. It's everything about the cover up. Sam not only lied, he asked the kid to lie, he employed one of his political consultants to coach the kid how to lie, he smeared Bob Ball, he left Randy Leonard swinging in the wind, and the hiring of Amy Ruiz smells awfully funny as well. Sam fucked up more than big time.

It's obvious that you don't see it - but it's a big deal.

seriously portland... aren't we this progressive town? aren't we better than this? this is just 'the convienent' scandle that the homophobic right wing assholes have been praying for - to burn him at the stake for being gay! just try and deny it, but if this were a male that had relations with a female 18year old it would be on the front page for half a day. if this were a female mayor and a male intern..people would be giving her props for being a sexy couger! lets forgive and forget people!!! sheeshh!!

For me it is all about him doing his job and Portland having a functioning council. He did not show up for council today - this is making me more and more upset with him. Get your butt in there and do your job or resign.
