Beau Breedlove Talks to the Oregonian

Posted by Dan Savage on Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 7:18 AM

Adams kissed me when I was still 17, says Breedlove.

The former legislative intern at the center of the controversy involving Portland Mayor Sam Adams says Adams kissed him twice when he was 17 and that their relationship had "crossed the line" toward romance earlier than Adams has acknowledged.

Beau Breedlove, now 21, told The Oregonian on Saturday that Adams kissed him on the lips on two occasions before he turned 18—once in Adams' car and the other in the second-floor men's room in City Hall after a party that Adams, then a city commissioner, had in his office.

Breedlove agrees with Adams' account that the two didn't have a sexual relationship until two weeks after he turned 18 in June 2005. He also says he welcomed Adams' kisses and romantic interest, even though he was underage.

"I do not see any relationship that I ever had with Sam as me being taken advantage of," Breedlove said. "I do not feel like I was ever a victim. I may have been 17, but I was an adult, and I knew what I was doing."

Breedlove brought his recently-adopted dog—which he named "Lolita"—to his interview at the offices of the Oregonian and posed for pictures with the dog. The experience of the past week—particularly the attentions of the media—have been "wrenching," Breedlove told the Oregonian.

i don't know if kissing counts as sexual contact but if so i doubt sam will stay mayor for long... too bad what a crappy situation.

This really isn't a gay vs. straight issue - the guy is just a creep. Legal or illegal, if I found out a 42-year-old man was kissing my 17-year-old daughter (or son - doesn't matter) anywhere, much less in a men's bathroom, there'd be hell to pay. Especially if the man was in a position of power like Adams. The whole thing is just gross and embarrassing for the city, and I hope he just resigns so we can all put it behind us. (I voted for him, by the way. Good choice that one.)

When should we schedule the rally in support of making out with minors in the City Hall bathroom?

I'm going to start making some signs! Dan: I'll save my receipts for you.

He named his dog Lolita? Really?

I smell a book deal in someone's future. GENIUS.

Ha ha. A commissioner making out with a 17 year old in the office (albeit, in the men's bathroom). There has to be a city code against that.

It must burn, Mercury, that the Oregonian gets the stories you can't.

never mind the possibilty he was 17,when has it been right to have sex with a page?,assistant?or young employee? anyone remember congressman foley?all he did was send raunchy e-mails to pages and everyone screamed for his head ,and dont forget the foot shuffeling senator.and how about our own bob packwood.but then we in portland love our "progressive" politicians, think goldschmidt raping a 14 year old was funny?,oops, im sorry it was a"relationship". so after all the gay rights and i support sam rallies are over and this poor judgement-king retains his job, dont bitch when the powerfull in this city take their pick of school kids for other "poor-judgement" purposes

Adams is done for, whether we like it or not. My biggest concern was Sam doing this in in the workplace and workplace related events, and it finding his way into the campaign. But that kissing is meant for arousal, which could be third-degree sexual abuse. Either way, he can't come back. I'm just so fucking heartbroken because he's so full of promise and he's the best person for the job. I feel bad for all of us.

Fortunately for you, Beau was not Sam's page, assistant, young employee, or intern.

Is it the kissing in the bathroom part that upsets everyone or the two men kissing in the men's room part?

How about the "that the Mayor's story is unraveling" part?

Kiala-

It's the grown man and child kissing in a men's room that upsets everyone.

Oh..and the changing stories. The slow drip...drip...drip of the revelations.

Kiala-
It's OK to criticize a gay man for acting (and this is a tremendous understatement) recklessly. Insinuating that anyone anyone who has a problem with an elected official kissing an underage kid is a homophobe doesn't allow for much of an intelligent conversation.

I could see have seen Sam staying before this latest revelation--his excuse that he lied because he didn't think anyone would believe that he hadn't had a relationship with Beau prior to his turning 18 was, if not excusable, at least understandable. But that was bullshit too. It's becoming too much. I'm with you the book deal though...I think he's starting to milk this.

I thought Sam resigning was a foregone conclusion, but maybe not, eh? I don't care about Beau other than how his testimony relates to Sam and whether he keeps the job or not. He can name his dog whatever he likes. Here's a question: If Sam stays on, do you all think he will need to do more to earn back the public trust, and if so, what would you like him to do?

Has anyone else commented on the fact that Beau also dated a 37 year old man after he dated Adams? Adding on the fact he owns a dog named Lolita, it looks like we have have a guy that enjoys going after older men. I know these two could of just said "thanks, but no thanks" to Beau but it makes it a little less creepy when it seems to be the younger chasing the older guy. Also, I could be very wrong since two cases really don't make it a fact. But the Portland press enjoys making speculations *cough* Matt Davis *cough* as a story, so I figured I'd join in the fun.
