Nine Shot Downtown Saturday Night

Posted by Matt Davis on Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 6:21 AM

UPDATE, 10:24am

Again, from the cops:

Last night around 10:30 pm, a male subject began shooting people who were standing on the sidewalk in front of The Zone nightclub and Kells Tavern and Pub in Downtown Portland. After shooting a total of nine people, the man shot himself at the scene.

Officers arrived in the area of SW 2nd and Pine and found one female victim dead at the scene. The eight additional victims were taken to OHSU and Emanual Hospital. The shooter was also transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.

One of the female victims transported to the hospital died after arrival and two other victims are still in critical condition. Two people have been released from the hospital and three others are in stable condition and are still being treated.

At this time there is no indication the shooter had any relationship with the victims but Detectives are continuing to investigate the motive in this incident.

Autopsies are being performed later this morning and the Medical Examiner's office is attempting to notify family members.

This incident is a tragedy for the victims and families involved and even veteran police officers are shocked at what has happened.

Anyone concerned about family members who might be potential victims should call Central Precinct at 503-823-0097 for information. Anyone with information concerning this incident should call Detectives at 503-823-0400.

From the cops:

On Saturday at approximately 10:30 pm, officers responded to a shooting call in the area of Southeast 2nd and Pine Street in Downtown Portland. Officers discovered multiple shooting victims and one suspect with a self inflicted gunshot wound. The victims were shot on the sidewalk in front of The Zone, an underage nightclub, and outside of Kells Tavern and Pub. The weapon used in this incident was recovered at the scene.

There are nine total shooting victims. One victim was found dead at the scene and one other victim died at the hospital after being transported. The additional seven shooting victims are in serious and stable condition at OHSU and Emanuel hospital. The suspect in this incident was also transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.

Detectives are processing the crime scene and we are currently trying to identify all of the victims and the suspect.

I will not have any more updates until after 9:00 am Sunday morning and I will send new information after that.

More as we have it. It's not yet known whether the shootings were gang-related, but City Commissioner Dan Saltzman launched "Operation Cool Down" last week in an effort to quell the continuing increase in gang-related violence here, which began with a shooting in a church on December 12.

I think it was a rival band member. There has been an increase in band warfare. What with the competition from the Music Cartel.
