There is Nothing Offensive About This Cartoon

Posted by David Schmader on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 10:31 AM

So says New York Post editor-in-chief Col Allan, who issued the following statement after Al Sharpton criticized the cartoon—which appears in today's Post—to the Associated Press:

"The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut," said editor-in-chief Col Allan. "It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

There's no question that Sharpton's occasionally guilty of being a "publicity opportunist," but there's also no question Col Allan is full of shit.

You mean Bush wrote the stimulus bill? I'm confused.

For clarification: I think the cartoon is a reference to the suicide by cop of Travis the Chimp.

It's totally racist-y. Yes, sometimes a chimp is just a chimp but not right now and not in a political cartoon.

Old Man Spencer, I'm going to let you in on something that's kinda shitty. So I want you to brace yourself. Okay? So here goes, you see, some people don't like Black People for no other reason than they're being Black. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true- it's called "racism". You should count yourself very luck that you haven't heard of it until now, because it's pretty common, and it's very ugly. Well anyway, these same people that Have these "racist" beliefs sometimes call Black People monkeys. They say this because they believe that Black People are stupid/less evolved versions of White people. I guess I could explain the racial significance of suggesting that a monkey, or rather a chimpanzee had been shot for proposing the recent stimulus bill that was in fact proposed by the first Black American President, but I figure that would be patronizing.

You figure right in that you are patronizing, Jason. I'm well aware of the historical depictions of black people, so your presumed enlightening was not needed. Believe it or not, you do not have to be stupid in order to assume that the chimp is not a direct comparison to Barak Obama. For one thing, the chimp doesn't look like Obama. I've always assumed that caricatures, racist or otherwise, have to bear the likeness of the person they are directed at. Secondly, Obama was not the only one who wrote and supported the stimulus package, and not even the only black person to do so. Understand that black people are not the only ones who have been compared to apes. You can visit www.bushorchimp.com if you don't believe me. Anyway, the scribbling of some hack at the New York post really that important? Considering that besides being a black man Barak is (rightly) the most powerful man on earth. Do we need to protect him from a cartoon?
