OPB Talks Hiphop

This morning OPB's Think Out Loud program was dedicated entirely to Portland hiphop. While hiphop and public broadcasting might not be always be the best fit—you know somewhere there was an elderly Prairie Home Companion supporter fumbling to cancel their membership—the program does an excellent job of showcasing Portland's hiphop legacy.

Included is a great oral history courtesy of Cool Nutz, plus appearances by up and comer Luck-One, and Graham Barey, the badass hiphop freelancer from this here "weekly newspaper in the Portland metro area."

Good job Graham, I hope they gave you a Weekend Edition lapel pin for your appearance. You can listen on right here.

End Hits: OPB, when you are ready for your show on obscure late-'90s emo bands, you know where to find us.

Seeing as it's Cat Friday, some posts about cats would be nice. Bonus points for pictures of cats. Thank you for your time.

NOT A CAT, you know the rules and so do I. Fridays are Buttermilk Biscuit Fridays.

Also, WTF? There's someone else in PDX named Graham?

I listened to OPB as I drove to Vancouver this morning! I kid you not. This show was awkward, but interesting.

I wasn't fumbling, Ezra. I was merely confused by the buttons on this iPod I was given. I couldn't seem to dial out.

"why does everyone always hate on prairie home companion?"

Because it sucks.

Or as Homer J screamed (paraphrasing) while listening: "Why can't you just be funny!!!"

My mom texted me this morning to tell me that the Mercury was mentioned on OPB. That shit happens all the time once you teach your mom to text.

I thought it was a good show. Cool Nutz' response to the Ethos guy, about helping kids to find their own voice vs. just ripping off rappers they like, was interesting. It reminded me of a book I just read, Book of Rhymes (http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/fl…)—Adam Bradley talks about how style influences content, so if you're imitating 50 Cent's style you're probably imitating his content as well, which can sound, uh, silly if you're not actually from Queens. But he went on to talk about how imitating other artists is where everybody starts, and how that's pretty par for the poetic tradition (ie Keats modeled himself after Shakespeare and so on). I also really liked the Cool Nutz' line about how if you're going to rap about yogurt you better make sure it's a good yogurt rap.
