Super Quick List of Openings

Posted by Patrick Alan Coleman on Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 3:50 PM

The economy hasn’t kept some in Portland from opening new joints. Here’s a quick glimpse of what’s new. Check ‘em out this weekend and tell me all about it.

Departures — This is the new restaurant on the roof of the Nines hotel. There hasn’t been a lot of love for Urban Farmer, the Nines take on the steakhouse, but we’ll see how they do with an Asian menu.

Bakery Bar II — The second location of the beloved bakery/café on Sandy isn’t necessarily new, but they opened in a snowstorm and just got around to letting anyone know. They’re new-ish. I suppose that’s good enough.

Café 401 — Morgan Brownlow, once of clarklewis, quietly opened this joint on NE 28th just days ago. His passion recently seems to be charcuterie. I’m hoping for some good cured meat.

Savor Soup House — Is a brand spankin’ new cart joining downtown’s international wonderland of theoretically mobile eateries. Think stew, soup and what they call a “grilled cheese bar.” Okay, I’m intrigued.

Mazi — This sushi joint opened in my hood not long ago. It’s just down from Bar Avignon. Lower Division Street is starting to look like quite a nice food destination. We’ll see what Mazi adds to the mix.

Mazi Sushi serves grasshoppers! As in, real actual live (er, dead, I mean) insect grasshoppers! With legs and heads and antennae and everything.

Savor is pretty good. I went there a few weeks ago after walking all the damn way to Alder and 10th to find Asian Station closed. The grilled cheese was nice and toasty and good, and the soup (I chose clam chowder) was quite nice.

cafe 401 is really good. small portions, great for going mellow style with the fam but not for big hangover breakfast.

Another new addition to the Wonderful World of Carts (I'm entirely sincere, a huge fan) is 'Best of Kazakhstan,' at the 5th/Oak grouping. No idea whether it's "authentic"--looking op Kazakh cuisine on Wikipedia, it sounds more like Tibetan than Persian--but it was damned tasty. Been open three weeks, according to the lovely proprietor, so I'm sure they could use some visitors. They'll give samples of anything, so no need to be shy.

Bakery Bar II is actually on Glisan, not Sandy.
