I looked for a good rollerskating cat video, but no dice.

I might start a new blog series, what do you think? The internet has ruined newspapers, books, music, privacy, sex, and friends, but it hasn't ruined ROLLER SKATING!!!

Some of us editorial staffers—the ones who like fun—went roller skating last night. Oaks Park hasn't changed since I had my second-grade birthday party there in 1989. It's awesome. It doesn't matter what song the organist tries to play on the Wurlitzer, what comes out is "You're Sixteen." Grouchy old ladies in skate championship jackets wear flesh colored tights pulled down over their skates, and lots of surprisingly polite middle schoolers take every opportunity to crash into each other. If you're an uncomfortable roller skater, as I am, a wonderful little man man will glide up to you and grab your hands and say, "Stand up straight. Straighter. Bend your knees more than you think you need to bend them. Skate from the heel, not the toe. Good," and you will skate better from that point on. Plus, watching people fall down is funny.

In keeping with the "Oaks Park is awesome" theme, tonight at Cosmic Monkey Comics, the Rose City Rollers celebrate the release of their second comic book, True Tales Of Roller Derby: Doppelganger at the Hangar—and based on the preview pages publisher Oni Press has up, sure looks like the Oaks Park hangar to me. The artist and writer, as well as members of Wheels of Justice, the team featured in the comic, will be at the store from 7-9 pm signing copies and sharing refreshments. Want more? Okay, Wheels of Justice and Axles of Annihilation go up against against teams from Seattle (BOO!) on Saturday; tickets here.
