Miss Universe in Guantanamo: "A loooot of fun!"

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Tue, Mar 31, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza can have a good time anywhere. Even in a maximum security prison full of unconstitutionally detained terror suspects! Go Dayana!! Last week Mendoza gushed at her website, about her totally awesome trip visiting U.S. soldiers at Guantanamo. The entry mysteriously disappeared from her blog this morning, but luckily Alternet posted the exclamation-mark ridden piece in full.

"The next days we had a wonderful time, this truly was a memorable trip! We hung out with the guys from the East Coast and they showed us the boat inside and out, how they work and what they do, we took a ride around the land and it was a loooot of fun! We also met the Military dogs, and they did a very nice demonstration of their skills."

Skills like growling at people who have been held without trial or charges for six years! Good doggy! Anyway, the clueless vacation continues:

"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting."

Yes, Dayana. VERY INTERESTING. When I hung out with several ex-detainees in January, they had a lot to say about limited access to books — for several years, Gitmo had only two books available in Pashto (the official language of Afghanistan): the Koran and Harry Potter.

Anyway, finally Dayana signs off: "I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful."

It's unfair to single out Dayana as totally clueless when most Americans have the same level of understanding of the relationship between Gitmo and the US Constitution. I'm not saying that makes it any less funny ... or sad.

This woman should stick strictly to the things she's good at like posing and posturing and leave the thinking to real hotties like Sarah Mirk.

For obfuscation: I'm not really sure how this is news. Or why smirk is so angry at a beauty pageant winner. I think it might be repressed anger over not being one of the popular girls in high school and not getting to be on the Homecoming Court.

For obfuscation: I really don't think it is good journalism to criticize theperformers who go on USO tours for going on said USO tours. It's perfectly all right to rip into the US governemt itself, though.

Oh yeah, "exclamation-mark ridden piece"; there were a total of six exclamation marks in the whole piece. Three of which are in the lede. The tone of this post reminds me of Mr. Davis writing about soccer stadiums.

I think we're missing the key point here: That woman is a fox! I'd like to "illegally detain her civilians" if you know what I mean.

(Yeah, neither do I.)

Those are good questions, Graham. What upsets me about this is not that Dayana helped some U.S. soldiers relax, but that she was obviously so clueless about the human rights abuses and suffering around her. It also makes me angry because she paints a dangerously false rosy picture of the detention camp (beaches! dogs! a bar!) which people could take to be the situation for everyone who is held there.

there's not a lot of things I get self-righteous about, but our nation's ability to ignore Guantanamo is one of them.
