Worst Idea Ever: The Gossip's Release Date for Music For Men

Idolator has a nice post about the ridiculous major label delusion that is behind a decision to release the new Gossip album, Music For Men, on separate release dates for the UK and the States.

While tiered release dates used to be commonplace in the industry, the series of tubes known as "the internet" has made that concept quite irrelevant. That said, the Gossip's label (Columbia—Rick Rubin shall save the music industry forever and ever!) has announced that Music For Men will be out in the UK on June 22nd, and in America it will come out four months later.

So, once again, this local band will have a record out in June, but us Portlanders should really wait until its proper domestic release date in October before we obtain it. Well played, Columbia.

End Hits: This post is available now in the USA, but won't be online in the UK until November.

Makes sense, considering they're way more popular in the UK.

jake, we all know they are more popular in the UK. But can you explain why that means this is a sensible business decision?

Tell me more about these tubes, please. Can I watch the television movie shows on them? If I touch them, will they burn?

Kiala, the tubes have a puppy back in their van. Do you want to see it? There's candy too.

Who knows. I just love trolling! But maybe the label thinks that if it goes off the hook over there, it'll lead to more press here and they can plan the advertising strategy accordingly. Maybe.

it'll be available on the US itunes at the same time as it comes out in the UK.
what's the mercury's problem when it comes to local bands that manage to get any more success than playing the doug fir?
