So...How's That Broccoli Doing?

Posted by Matt Davis on Fri, May 22, 2009 at 10:44 AM

It's been 17 days since Mayor Sam Adams planted a victory garden outside city hall, and the results have been impressive. I caught up with OSU master gardener Jen Aron this morning as she was examining some chard leaves for some kind of mystery blight.

Actually, the chard isn't doing so well—the leaves have this weird-looking stuff on them. Nor is the organic broccoli—it's too hot, and Aron is worried it's going to "bolt," go to seed without producing. I remembered it was the mayor who planted the broccoli during the opening ceremony, and was trying to come up with an appropriate political metaphor during our conversation, but gave up. So has Aron. She's going to replace the broccoli with some tomatoes and peppers, and was a bit reluctant to have me write about the broccoli. But as I told her nobly and in the best spirit of public service, "I am here to write the truth." More importantly, LOOK AT THE LETTUCE! 17 days and it's shot up:

LETTUCE: WHO NEEDS THE FARMER'S MARKET WHEN I CAN WALK A SHORTER DISTANCE AND STEAL IT...

The spinach, too...

ARON: PLANS TO HARVEST SPINACH NEXT WEEK...

Aron says she is pleased at the respect being shown to the garden, so far.

Did they plant from starts or seed? I wished my spinach looked like that!

Hey Matt, if you're still lurking around on this old thread... my girlfriend and I are wondering how much those Spinach and Lettuce starts cost versus the cost of purchasing Spinach and Lettuce in the store.

I know all the gardening prices. Actually, I don't. Anybody?

Starts usually come in a 6 pack with ~4 plants bunched together per 1/6 container. These packs usually cost ~$1.50 so that comes out to roughly $.06 per plant. Assuming you only get half to live that is still really cheap.
