A serious question

Posted by Stephen Marc Beaudoin on Sat, May 30, 2009 at 8:34 AM

I was chatting up some of my Facebook friends last night about (gaaaaay!!) Pride upcoming, and getting some rather unbridled criticisms about the fest ("every year I'm disappointed with PDX's Pride," one wrote), which prompted Pride NW board president Debra Porta to throw out a bombshell of a question, which I reprint here and pose to all of you Blogtownies:

What is it you find disappointing about Portland's Pride festival? And yes that is a serious question.:)

There you have it, people! A serious question about Portland Pride, followed by a smiley face emoticon. Queer or otherwise, what's your beef with Pride?? Have at it.

(PS, tonight I'm heading to something called a "Pride Mixer" tonight at the Portland Q Center, 4115 N. Mississippi Ave., to shmooze it up with some of the peeps in charge of Portland's three separate pride fests: Latino Gay Pride, Black Pride and Portland Pride. Fun! Right?)

I was looking forward to the fun run this year, but I was disappointed to see that it became another drag-related event.

How about having to wait in massively long, unshaded lines in the hot sun to get into the waterfront vendor/exhibit area, and then have your beverage taken from you because no outside beverages are allowed?

Pride began as a demand for liberation. Then it turned into a celebration of gains in liberation.

What are we demanding or celebrating now? The one right yet to fall is marriage, and that movement is so tepid, it inspires more yawns than anything else.

But I do love getting my free toothpaste and brush from the gay dentist booth. 2, 4, 6, 8 - white smiles are really great!

Too vanilla.

This is the problem in general with Portland. People are lethargic. Could people be sedated by all the friendliness, the relaxedness, the good-vibed-ness, the tolerance, the PC-ness....? Or maybe by the beauty of the place, or by roses, leading to endless rose-theming? Rose queen, rose parade, rose city, city of roses, rose festival...

There are hardly any demonstrations either. A pregnant woman high on crack gets shot by a cop while driving her car away from him and 50 people show up to demonstrate. And don't forget, his car has got a rose painted on it.

Call it the Bland Factor.

Too many hets. Too many churches in the actual parade.

That's about right.
