When Graphic Design Goes Unchecked

Posted by Matt Davis on Sun, May 31, 2009 at 9:19 AM

This ad has been popping up on Blue Oregon over the last few days. Every time I see it, I marvel and cringe and then marvel, once again.

Someone did it for free in Photoshop. That's what that ad screams to me. Some aspiring designer, hoping to stick something in a portfolio, not realizing A) it should look good; B) political ads are poison in your resume.
Sometimes to, with jobs like that, they get continually micro-managed by some lackey related to the event, who has become your person of contact, and it's tweak this and make this bigger. Pretty soon, you just literally do everything they ask and send it off, no matter how horrible looking. Sometimes it'll even show signs of further tweakage. That's why you never tell friends or family that you're working on something for a politician.

What's up with the atrocious kerning, leading and not-quite-centered text?

And Jesus people, DO NOT SAVE IMAGES WITH TEXT AS JPGS! USE SOME MOTHERFUCKING PNGS! IT'S THE 21ST CENTURY ALREADY!

Hahahha. "These aren't the politicians you're looking for. This graphic designer can go about his business. Move along."

Again, person needs to be asked to do penance in the form of making out with someone of a non-compatible sexual persuasion, at the bar.

Humorless policy wonks think graphic design is frivolous. They probably only listen to NPR, too.

Dean is going to use Blumenauer's head as a bowling ball.
