It's Official: The 19-Year-Old From Beaverton is the New Smashing Pumpkins Drummer

Congratulations (I guess) got out to young Mike Byrne of Beaverton, who has just been officially selected by Billy Corgan as the “drummer of the future” for the remnants of the group known as the Smashing Pumpkins. We reported this a few days back, but now it looks official.

Take it away, smashingpumpkins.com:

Speculation has been running rampant across the internet and airwaves today due to a few posts that have appeared online (HipstersUnited.com | SP.com) regarding the young drummer Mike Byrne.

SP.com can finally announce that Billy has been working with young (19) Mike Byrne on demos. Word from the studio is that Mike is an exceptionally talented and gifted drummer and things are going very well.

This is the most exciting news since the release of Blinking with Fists. (55 used from $0.34.)

End Hits: Thanks to a 10pm curfew, I missed the second half of a SP show on the Gish tour. Damn you, mom.

This kid probably had just learned to walk when Gish came out. On the other hand, becoming the drummer of SP at this point is like being named the Minister of Finance in a small, third-world island country about to be overrun by rebels from the mountains.

I was actually listening to Gish last night in my basement while patching holes in the walls with hydraulic cement - preparing them for a waterproofing sealer. A more youthful me would never have imagined myself in that scenario.

Come on Portland, give Mickey a break. He's a good kid (well, he was a kid back when I knew him, he's probably a young adult now), and let's get behind him when he needs our support. Tearing him down isn't doing anyone any good.
