From the police bureau's spokeswoman, Mary Wheat:

On Friday, June 12, 2009, Joseph E. Wild, a 28-year-old, four year member of the Portland Police Bureau, was arrested at the Justice Center in downtown Portland. Officer Joseph Wild was charged with 71 counts of Official Misconduct in the Second Degree and 62 counts of Telephonic Harassment. Officer Wild was most recently assigned to North Precinct.

This investigation began when a female victim began getting unwanted harassing phone calls and she filed a report concerning the matter. The report was followed up on and the investigation led to the possible identification of a City of Portland employee. Portland Police Detectives began an investigation and during their investigation, discovered additional victims who had also received unwanted harassing telephone calls. The investigation led to the arrest of Officer Wild.

Detectives found no information to suggest that any other officer was aware of or condoned any of Officer Wild’s conduct.

As with all ongoing criminal investigations and internal personnel matters, Chief Sizer is unable to comment further on the Bureau member or the allegations at this time. However, Chief Sizer and the Portland Police Bureau will release as much information as possible in an effort to be fully transparent when the Bureau is able to do so.
