The Peoples' Sandwich of Portland

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 10:52 AM

The gourmet sandwich shop trend continues: Steve Carder just opened The Peoples' Sandwich of Portland on Thursday at 53 NW 1st, just in time for America's birthday, not that their logo seems at all patriotic:

The web site is still pending, but according to the Twitter page they're offering cheese steak, Cuban, hot Italian, and veggie sandwiches. Here's the Cuban, with "House made ham and pork loin, swiss cheese with house made pickel, mayo and mustard."

Has anyone on Blogtown been yet? Mercury food editor Patrick Coleman is on it, but in the meantime maybe downtown worker types should check it out on your lunch break and report back!

Hi Marjorie!

No hate, but doesn't it bug you when people mix incompatible Russian political themes? If you are going there with your entire business image, should you at least have it somewhat coherent? Are they the "sandwich czar" per their twitter or are they the Soviet "Peoples Sandwich" that their name and logo suggest? It would be pretty nonsensical to really be both since, you know, the Bolsheviks had the czar and his family arrested and killed in a basement. I bet they have a Putin-wich too for good measure. Why not? I guess it's all Wacky Slavic Ironic Stuff right?

Sandwich looks lightweight good tho.

That is the worst example of a Cuban sandwich that I've ever seen. I mean, most versions around town are pretty shitty, but this... An embarrassment to Cuban sandwiches everywhere.

God, that Cuban looks awful. It's a hard sandwich to really fuck up, but they seem to've done it.

Their sign said they were open until 6:00. It was 5:30 and they were closed. Way to run a good business fellas...

Sort of hard to find at first, and the crackheads in Old Town always make me feel like I'm in a real city, but got there at midnight on Saturday. THANK FUCKING GOD. It was truly the best sloppy plateful of warm meatwich that I've had in a long time. The flavor/complete juicyness of the meat, the crunch of the bread, the zing of the pickle ... fuck off haters, I'm all in.

i went last night at 2 am and had the BEST pork loin sandwich i've ever eaten! my brother had the veggie sandwich which is broccoli, cauliflower and zucchini (and he hates all those vegetables) and loved it! he said the seasonings he used and the way it was cooked made it delicious. i as a carnivore and my brother as a vegetarian both give this place 2 giant thumbs up!

The Peoples' Sandwich of Portland caters to a diverse crowd. From those who love late night meats to vegetarian eats. The names of the sandwiches are playful and tantalizing. Which pairs perfectly with their creative and healthy menu. I love that they use Dave's Killer Hoagies which uses only the finest ingredients and supports a good cause. The employees are an absolute joy. Updates are their twitter like: "My spirit animal is a cheese steak" makes me absolutely ecstatic. For you sandwich nazi's I recommend trying the Uberalis or how about you stay at home and spoon fed your sourpuss some sauerkraut.

Hey Mel, I'm sure you looked like a foetus at one point too...human of course.
I was hoping for more "review" type of comments I guess. You know, maybe go to the place, try a sandwich and then write something that can be helpful to others interested in going.
So I decided to go and had the cheesesteak. I'm a carnivore and it was one of the best cheesesteak I've had in town. The beef was very tender and juicy. And most important, it was 2:45am on a saturday night.

These folks make a good sandwich, with quality ingredients that make you feel like you just did something well for yourself. Sure, we can all make crazier and more idealistic food at home, but quality food is hard to find on the streets.

And as per the logo, power to the people, and their health. If you want to get crabby about mixed messages in advertising and politics ask Quizno's why it is OK for the oven to tell the sandwich plebe, "Put it in me"... or why Coca-cola marketed Fanta to Nazis...

When I saw this logo I immediately thought, "What the people reap, the people eat". Simple as that.

Viva Fidel!

Just went there. Nice people. High prices. Okay sandwich. Half-baked store design. As much as I want a good sandwich shop in this area, I think this will fail. I am not complaining to complain. I hope the owner reads this.

Drop your lunchtime prices till you get a solid customer base, then raise 'em as necessary. Stumptown had 1.00 coffee with a free refil for a long time until they got huge.

You can charge 8 bucks for a sandwich at night, but during lunchtime keep your prices low till you work the kinks out. We're in a recession. I will hardly even do kell's for 8 bucks.

I dunno. Sandwich shop seems like it will do best if people can go there almost every day. The sandwich selections and prices are not an everyday type of thing. If you're in the biz of gourmet, once a month type of place, you're gonna have to make the whole experience feel a lot more gourmet.

I had a great sandwich there about a week ago. Cured Italian meats, very tasty, and good homemade potato chips. I'm a firm believer that sandwiches should come with a pickle on the side - no pickles here, at least not on the side. I agree with a previous comment that $8 seems a bit steep. I'd like to go back there since the place is really convenient to where I work, but $8 is a splurge on lunch that I can't afford too often. But if you can afford it, by all means check it out. Owners, if you're reading this, maybe you could start up some kind of "frequent buyer" punch card so that if you buy X sandwiches you get one free.

I actually had the Hammer and Pickle (what you refer to as the Cuban in the above picture) yesterday for lunch and I would like to state a few things: 1) my sandwich looked nothing like the "pig fetus" pictured on this blog; 2) the sandwich was appealing to my eyes as well as my taste buds, and; 3) my fries were served with the best damn hot sauce and ketchup my mouth has ever had the privilege of tasting.

I've eaten there several times - great food every time. Prices are what I expect for downtown (rent aint cheap there people). As for the mixing of Slavic stuff the first post complained about - no I don't hate it (to answer your question) and yes I have lived over there. It is wacky, it is fun - and just that. he isn't trying to give us a history lesson, just having fun with iconic symbols. And the FOOD IS GREAT there!!!! Really, they do it up themselves, even making their own potato chips. SO yeah, considering the prep they put into all of this good food, the prices are right for the neighborhood. Good job People's!!
