Mayor: "Portlanders Are A Fair Minded People."

Posted by Matt Davis on Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 1:40 PM

I had to race round the corner for a meeting after writing about this morning's recall submission, but had to rush out to take a phone call from the mayor at 11am, inquiring if I had any questions on today's events. The mayor's staff aren't allowed to speak on his behalf about the recall under elections law, Adams told me. So he was using his personal cell phone to make the call.

"I think Portlanders are a fair minded people," he said, when I asked him what message he had for the citizens of the city. "I'm focused on getting Portlanders back to work, on the high school drop out rate, and on positioning Portland at the heart of the green economy."

Adams suggested Portlanders look at this week's council agenda, which contains "the city's first economic development strategy in nearly a decade," plans for six streetcars built locally, and clean energy work.

But can we really believe Adams is the best person to position Portland at the heart of the green economy, if he was in Wyoming last week when Transportation Secretary Ray La Hood came to town?

"The hard work is getting ink on these deals," said Adams. Adams said he met with Secretary La Hood, and that he's an important man. "But so is Peter, my boyfriend," said Adams. "And this was my first vacation scheduled in six months."

"My focus is not necessarily on sitting in front of the cameras but in getting the funding we need," said Adams. Speaking of which...

IT'S RECALL PREDICTION TIME!

Update: If it helps with your prediction skills, the recall needs to gather 32,183 valid signatures.

I wouldn't sign.. I'd rather Adams could concentrate on running the city instead of dealing with a bunch of bashers.

Under Oregon state law, it is a felony, Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, for an adult to kiss a minor with the intent of "arousal" and both Adams and Breedlove have both publicly admitted to making-out well before the young man was 18-years-old.

Adams has not been arrested because of the political fall-out such an arrest would have for the Democratic party in the state and nationally.

Check with the Oregon State Police, and you will learn that we've arrested over a dozen adults for committing this very same crime in 2009. Check with your local police department, and you'll learn that we've got almost 100 people in the state on our Sex Offender list for committing this same exact crime with a 16 or 17 year old.

Adams did in fact break the law, violated the public trust, and attempted to cover-up his crime. I can't wait to sign the recall petition.

You know, Sam ain't all dumb. His two priorities are putting people back to work and improving the drop out rate.

Considering we have the 2nd highest unemployment in the nation and one of the worst drop out rates, wouldn't you call those goals "low hanging fruit"?

For clarification: "Adams and Breedlove have both publicly admitted to making-out well before the young man was 18-years-old."

That's not true. Adams says it didn't happen. Breedlove says it did, and that Adams is lying about it to save his career.

The court of law is closed.
The court of public opinion is open.

Where do I get my recall signature sheets?

"plans for six streetcars"

Oh, yeah . . . that'll fix all that ails us. Efficient AND profitable!

"I hadn't had a vacation for six months"

Most working people don't take vacations even that often.

I'm a "fair minded" person, Sam. I think it's fair to question whether you are worthy of being my mayor.

(Does the "green economy" actually exist? Or is it something that Portlanders just talk about, like the "bioscience cluster" that was supposed to appear at South Waterfront?)

I figure if you can actually get enough Portlanders to sign off on renaming 39th, you can get them to sign anything.

@Blabby: I would say that perhaps most working people *in the U.S.* don't take vacations that often, but that's hardly the case worldwide.

hey Dave - watch out with that "low hanging fruit" talk. You're bound to get called a homophobe, 'round these parts.

Ask all the people manufacturing the equipment for the new streetcar, or constructing the LEED buildings, or refining the biofuels, or working on the Big Pipe if there's a green economy here.

Andy... you're right. If it weren't for that, we'd have the highest unemployment in the nation... instead of the second highest!

@Blabby, what kind of shit job do you have that you can't take a 5-day weekend every six months or so? For all the blathering you do about people having jobs and paying taxes, you don't seem to be good at doing either apparently?

Jasun, I for one am impressed with your stand regarding signatures. I don't think you are coming at this from hate, just a misguided need to punish Sam for lying in the face of a question he should have never been asked. If the WWeek would have shown the same editorial judgment the Mercury did upon receiving the anonymous email from Beau we would not be here. If Sam had not gone overboard with his denials we would not be here.

If Sam had lied about having sex with someone under 18 I would gladly sign the recall, but since the only lie was about legal sexual conduct that he should have never been asked about in my opinion I am not really into signing. I will do you the favor though of testing your signature gatherer with a hearty "Hell yeah I'll sign, I hate teh gays." I will let you know how it goes.

Andy, there's no more green economy here than anywhere else. Hate to break it to ya.

Besides, I think the Big Pipe involves BROWN jobs. Ha ha! Get it? Turds! Ha!

Graham, the fact that I don't take frequent vacations mean I'm not good at having a job? Whuh? What is this moon man logic you're using on me?

@blabby My employer gives me 18 personal days a year in addition to 6 paid holidays. I have an entry level position. In three years that will go up to 23 personal days a year. I'm saying that if you had a decent job that paid decent income tax revenue, you'd have the ability to take time off work for vacations.

Wow Graham, do they give you regular pedicures to keep your creative class feelings in joint? Do you get a pussy massage every day too?

I'm tired of your attacks on us real clock punchin' working men! That's it: class war! Eat the trustafarians!

@blabby I am definately not in the creative class. I'm not really that creative. I work in the boring-ass field of Database Maintenance. So I'm somewhere between an IT professional and a Bureaucrat.

And I'm not really sure what a "pussy massage" is. Is that where a pussy massages me? Or are you calling me a pussy for getting a massage? Or are you saying that I'm a woman who needs her pussy massaged?

(In all honesty, I had a massage last Friday to try and help deal my steadily worstening Carpal Tunnel).

I won't sign.

I couldn't care less about what these men do in the bathroom. And there's no more harm the lies or bad decisions can do to us.

Continuing to fan the flames misguides the city that something different is something better, and offers shelter from scrutiny to all other city bureaucrats.

I think I've read two or three posts about Adams not being here when LaHood was in town. He had a window of opportunity to get out of town for a while, he took it, and he missed one photo op. Big deal.

I think that if you ever did develop a bioscience cluster, you could probably go down to OHSU at the South Waterfront and have them remove it, at least between Monday and Friday.

If Sam actually cared about this city more than he cares about himself he would just resign.

He's a laughing stock everywhere.

Does it matter if our mayor is a clown to the rest of the politicians?

He definitely won't be able to get any favors, that's for sure.

Will it matter to John Q Public if Sam stays or goes, I doubt it.

This city will still be a screwed up mess one way or the other.
