Portal Of Fire? Still Burning? Coulton's Inferno?

Posted by Earnest "Nex" Cavalli on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 11:30 AM

Not content with the inherent memetic potential of Jonathan Coulton's endlessly repeated Portal theme "Still Alive," or the inherent fun of fire, a team of geeks from MIT have combined the two Internet mainstays.

That, easily-impressed Blogtown readers, is a Ruben's Tube ("standing wave flame tube" if you're nasty).

Similar in effect to the graphical equalizer found in any computer-based audio program created over the last decade, the Tube pairs compressed flammable gas and an ignition source with the propulsive energy of sound waves to achieve an effect that is simultaneously mesmerizing and insanely dangerous.

Think of this as the iPod Steve Jobs would have created if instead of snug black turtlenecks, he spent all his days clad in charred body hair and thick layers of bloody gauze.

I am apparently easily fascinated, like with the 5 metal balls on strings. By the way, does anyone know where I can find one of the aforementioned executive toys?
