Carrie Brownstein = World's Biggest Phish Fan

Former Sleater-Kinney guitarist, and NPR blogger, Carrie Brownstein has one more claim to fame: Phish fan. Well, sort of. For her Monitor Mix blog, Brownstein has tossed her impeccable indie cred to the curb and embraced the band:

Phish is a band that some people intuitively don't like; it is the liverwurst, the Twilight book series, and the waterbeds of the music industry! And why should it be? This dismissal of Phish by a large portion of us is both unfair and unwarranted. And that's why I'm willing to change.

So after buying a pint of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food ice cream, then purchasing her first Phish CD (I admire her priorities), Brownstein has devoted herself—for an entire week—to the Vermont jam band. In fact, she's even hosting a little event in their honor:

Tomorrow night—Wednesday, July 15th—Portland Phish fans, along with Portland non-Phish fans who want to see if they could ever love Phish, will meet at 8 p.m. at Moon and Sixpence. (2014 NE 42nd Ave. between Tillamook and Sandy)

If you are a Phish fan, please bring along some burned CDs of your favorite live shows or a mix CD with your most cherished tracks. I've had countless suggestions as to which YouTube links I should click or which shows I should download, but this meet-up will help both expedite and streamline the process. After all, I only have this one week to fall in love (okay, not really, but for the sake of the blog, yes!)

Excuse me, but I have a few questions about this Phish meet-up: Can I bring my dog? Do you allow soundboard taping? Spare any change? Wait, you sure you aren't a cop?

Eh, forget it. I'll be in the parking lot selling PB&J sandwiches out of my killer art car.

End Hits: We miss you, Jerr-Bear.

The dirty little secret of lots of hipsters is that they spent their early twenties/late teens following some jam band. I have endless anecdotal evidence for this.

Thing is, I've often been annoyed by the central argument here that entire genres just plain old cannot be enjoyed, when actually a true music nerd likes a little of everything.

So really the dichodomy isn't hippie music vs. cool music, it's simple vs. elaborate, ripping off The Clash vs. ripping off Frank Zappa.

Good for you, Carrie Brownstein, unless this is some silly fucking ironic exercise, in which case...Well, surprise me. Please.

Play Golgi Apparatus, bra!

My dirty little secret from days past is that I liked the Phish Singles album. Far fewer meandering, lengthy noodle-fests. 5 or 6 short, sweet and awfully pretty pop songs.

No self-respecting Phish kid sells PB & J, please. It's super kind vegan burritos or ganja-goo balls.
