New Food Cart: Wolf and Bear's

Posted by Alison Hallett on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 10:16 AM

Maybe you've noticed the lonely food cart parked in the middle of an otherwise empty lot at SE 20th and Morrison (across from the Urban Farm Store). Well: It's called Wolf and Bear's. It's run by a charming hipster couple—he was born in Israel, she's worked at kitchens around town for years, and between those influences and their travels, they've cobbled together a Jewish/Middle Eastern menu. And it's good. They serve pitas, falafel, salads, and (if memory serves) there were a couple breakfast-oriented items on the menu board as well, plus Extracto coffee hot or iced (cracked cardamom on request! yum), iced tea, and lemonade with mint. They make most of their items from scratch, and strive to do the sustainability thing whenever possible.

Their falafel is homemade and it's excellent—I had the "out to lunch," a pita with labneh, gorgnzola, carmelized onions, roasted red peppers, falafel, greens, and tahini & olive oil, plus a ridiculously good spicy mint sauce. Seemed a little steep at $7 until I started eating it. I want to eat it again now.

Here's a quick transcription of the printed menu (there were also some items on the board that weren't on the menu):

Pitas
Simple: Hummus or labneh on pita with salad greens, olive oil, and za'tar spice, $5; add roasted peppers and caramelized onions for $1

Sabich:
hummus, grilled eggplant, hard boiled egg, onions, cucumber, pickles, parsley and salad greens topped with house tahini sauce and mango pickle rapped in pita (vegan: sub potato for egg), $7

Falafel:
w/eggplant, hummus, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, eggplant, parsley, greens, tahini, $6.50

Salads:
Gorgonzola crumbles, carmelized walnuts, raisins, onion, beet, carrot on mesclun greens w/balsamic vinagrette, $5.50

Homemade gamasio (w/nori), red peppers, onions, beet, garrot, raisins on greens w/tahini, $5.50

They're open Thurs-Mon. Didn't get the hours.

I'm not sure how many more food carts this town can realistically support, but I do really enjoy seeing them fill in gaps in the neighborhood, especially when they do so deliciously. I hope these guys stick around.

they are seriously great folks, too--very kind, generous, and fun. This is a wonderful new addition with great food that's veggie/vegan friendly.

I was wondering about that place. Other than the words 'Wolf & Bears' there wasn't anything to tell you what it was. I just assumed it was coffee. Now I know better and will try it out.

Just got back from lunch there. Excellent Israeli-style falafel, and the homemade hot sauce is amazing. Thanks for the tip!

Good to know their days-of-operation - I saw them on my way to the bus yesterday, wondered if/when I might eat there. Looks like today!

And yeah, I'm delighted by the location: a block from the park, right by a bus stop, surrounded by residential neighborhood. I'm hoping for another food-cart-lot!
