Carl Wolfson Wants Me To Report On His Award

Posted by Matt Davis on Fri, Jul 31, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Yesterday I mentioned KPOJ host Carl Wolfson cutting me off on his morning show. Today I got an email from Carl, which seemed like kind of an apology, I guess...

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the pub, even though it was negative. (I left a blog entry under CW).

I don't know if you listen to our full three hours each weekday, but we pride ourselves on being interesting, entertaining and relevant. Christine, Paul and I put in countless hours to cover so many issues. And we do it (99% of the time) respectfully. KPOJ has no budget for publicity.

The only thing I hate about your blog is that it gives the impression that I am not interested in education, which is one of my passions. I know drama (i.e. hang-ups) usually gets all the play. But below is something you might report, too.

Talk to you next week!

Carl

It's true. I did mention that Wolfson cut me off after I'd been trying to talk about forgiving Mayor Sam Adams and moving on to talk, for example, about the mayor's efforts to up Portland's abysmal 57 percent graduation rate.

Attached to Wolfson's email was the following picture:

CARL'S AWARD: DO YOU SEE IT???

I still forgive you for cutting me off, Wolfson! Even if you're not really sorry.

And I still forgive Sam Adams.

Looks like someone is now in the running for the Excellence in Reporting on the Excellence in Reporting Award Award.

We don't want anyone picking on Carl or Matt. They are both great progressives. We have real political enemies. We need to save our energy for fighting those fights.

We are so fortunate to have both Carl's KPOJ morning show and Matt's reporting in this paper.

I wanted to call in during one of Matt's reports on KPOJ when he described attending a right wing conference. I had just done the same thing and wondered if we were at the same function. It is good for some of us with the stomach for it to attend those things. The info at those conferences/meetings are littered with misinformation. I cried after attending one of them.

Carl's show is a life saver. He and his team are witty, smart, honest, and caring. I learn something new from his show every day.

Please, people, let's stick together.

I forgive the Oregon Education Association for giving that award to someone so unprofessional. Oh wait. No I don't.

Hey, hey, where's our good sandbox behavior? Carl and Matt are big boys and can agree to disagree. A beer summit is an excellent idea! Aileen was right. We have bigger enemies than each other and we need not let our attentions get diverted from the real people that mean us harm. Semper fi, guys.

So he has 3 hours of show a day, and he has to cut YOU off after 10 minutes of listening to him speak about Sam?

I mean, don't get me wrong, you can't spend the entire show on the phone with one guy, but people make priorities in life, and it looks like his involve telling you how he feels about Sam, not actually about, well, "news," which is what I thought the show was supposed to be about...

Poor Matt got his feelings hurt when he was hung up on by big bad Carl. Sorry, if you want to take a lukewarm (at best) stance on a major issue expect a little controversy.

I have more respect for the people who supported Sam from the get go and continually support him regardless of what he does. Wanting everyone to "forgive or forget" means that you see the error of Adams ways but you feel as if your own personal agenda is more important (Hi Matt.)

That is all good and fine but Matt should find a line of work where this kind of apathy is embraced.

May I suggest Matt Davis for Commissioner? Perfect!

Matt: Intentionally or unintentionally, you did not get the point of my email. It was not about an award or self-aggrandizement. The point was: Your claim that I don't want to "move on" from the Sam issue is untrue. We cover local issues thoroughly on KPOJ. Sam knows exactly how I feel about his political situation (he should resign), yet he has been on our show three times in the last six weeks. I've talked with him about schools, infrastructure, the convention hotel, green jobs. The second point: The only pub we get from The Merc is about a semi-hang-up (drama), not our show's commitment as Portland's only progressive talk station. This blogging episode has only reinforced my belief that sizzle and name-calling generally win out over depth and dignity. "Depth with dignity." There's a concept. Carl

Welcome to the Merc, Carl. It might behoove you to lower your expectations a bit.

Yup Carl - you're not gonna get depth or dignity from the Merc. It seems to relish being contrary in order to be 'unconventional' or 'alternative'... as if cool means being the opposite of mainstream and being snide is hip.

Yes sorry Carl, I agree with pdxrocks. I love you but do not understand why you have representatives of the Portland Mercury on the show and not from the Portland Tribune. No one really reads the Mercury. It's just out there so when someone is eating/drinking alone and forgot to bring reading material they have something to look at besides the people at the next table.
