Another Reason Not To Live In Eugene

Posted by Matt Davis on Tue, Aug 4, 2009 at 11:19 AM

From the Associated Press this morning:

LEABURG — The Eugene Water & Electric Board plans to shorten the official name of a Leaburg park because the current one includes a torture technique.

The board's switching the name from Lloyd Knox Water Board Park to simply Lloyd Knox Park.

EWEB spokesman Lance Robertson says dropping the "water board" reference makes sense because most people refer to the spot as Lloyd Knox Park.

The park dates to the 1940s when the utility was called the Eugene Water Board. EWEB honored Lloyd Knox, a longtime caretaker and tour guide, by adding his name in 2000.

Matt, are you saying that you condone water boarding? Because that's what you're saying if are against the name change.

Matt didn't your wife sucesfully lobby for tens of millions of dollars in state money for the construction of U of O's new basketball arena? Since I'm sure the Merc doesn't pay well shouldn't you not be bagging on the gravy train that is Eugene that keeps you in your Pearl District condo?

That can't be right, I'm pretty sure Matt Davis is staunchly against the use of public money for anything like a private sports venture.

I'd like to assure you that the Eugene Water & Electric Board did not change the park name because of the reference to torture. We changed the park name to reflect the fact that "Lloyd Knox Park" is now the commonly used name for the park, as indicated by my comment in the third paragraph of the story above. The reporter who wrote the original story (Register-Guard) asked me a question about the torture reference, and I replied that it might have a different meaning today, but that the reason we were changing the park name was to reflect the common usage of the park name. That's it. While the RG story accurately reflected my statements, subsequent media stories have made an inaccurate leap of logic. Lloyd Knox was a cool guy and a great caretaker of the park up the McKenzie; shortening the park name fully honors his contributions.
