Portlandsterdam University, Stoney Girl Gardens, and That One Time I Got Real Pot Plants for a Photo Shoot and Then My Cat Was Stoned for Two Days

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 10:26 AM

If you were reading the Mercury back in 2007, you might remember this shot from a photo shoot I did for the fall fashion issue of that year:

8.23_Fashion_pot.jpg

The models are "smoking" dried kitchen herbs, but the pot plants are real, and were graciously hooked up for me by Stoney Girl Gardens, whose 100% organic medicine has been grown in Oregon since 1999. Everyone told me I wasn't going to be able to get real pot plants for this shot, and I was delighted when Stoney Girl not only helped me prove them wrong, but were super gracious and helpful the whole time, and didn't even get mad when my cat Bruce started tearing into their beautiful plants with such vigor and determination that he would start growling ferociously if you tried to pull him off. They just let him eat it, which kept him mellow and docile for like 36 hours afterward!

Anyway, Jenifer Valley from Stoney Girl just got back in touch with me with some news. They are going to be featured in Big Book of Buds 4, for one thing, and four of their strains are going to be included in the newly revised Marijuana Growers Handbook by Ed Rosenthal, due out in November, so big ups on that!

But the big news is that THEY ARE FOUNDING A POT SCHOOL calld Portlandsterdam University, offering "History, Horticulture, Advanced Botany, Legal, Political Science, Cooking and many other classes designed for the Marijuana Industry of Oregon." But don't get the wrong idea, this is a completely legitimate venture (albeit with a really hilarious name):

We are an education place, not a get rich business learning center.

We believe that Marijuana is an Industry here in Oregon and we need to deal with it before someone else does. This is also the biggest step to legalization that we can think of. The production and sales of Marijuana puts it into commerce. The most important win is that this is State Regulated and along with being a credited course in our only Health University in the state, puts MMJ on the map that will be international news. This will make huge progress for our efforts of full legalization. We wish your opinion and knowledge contribution to this project.

OHSU's even on board!

Portlandsterdam University has been asked to file a Syllabus to offer classes as an extension of the Oregon Health Sciences University. Classes will be offered as a credited course to Doctors, Scientists, Nurses, Pharmacists and other health professionals.

"We believe there is a great need to educate our medical professionals for the emerging Medical Marijuana Industry" said Mike Mullins, director of services. "We are very excited to offer Medical Marijuana as a credited course to our health professionals."

Congratulations to Stoney Girl Gardens, and please do visit the web site for more info.

My mother is a master gardener. And a couple days ago one of the other master gardeners got a rather shady call from someone who needed someone to come look at something, and so we he went out and looked, and someone was having trouble with the 25 pot plants in their greenhouse. (For the record: The clone wasn't matched to the light levels in the place.) It was all legit and the master gardener helped them figure out the problem, except the master gardeners are supposed to be helping people that are growing things for their own use, this grower was growing for other people, so he should have called the county extension agent directly, except, well, he was a little paranoid and didn't want to do that.

Anyways, the master gardeners were discussing it at their meeting: It is a crop, as far as everyone is concerned OSU needs to put out a manual on it, it is OSU's job to help farmers, it is right in their charter. And the master gardeners need to get a copy of the manual for people growing it at home, so they can answer these sorts of questions the next time they show up...

More Oregonians grow marijuana than any other plant by far. Marijuana growers use horticultural techniques that are much more complicated than those used for other crops. An increasing amount of this growing is completely legitimate and authorized by the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act. There are now over 25,000 patients qualified by over 3000 Oregon doctors. But there is still no legal supply system so each patient has to grow their own or "designate" a grower to produce their medicine. There is a huge need to educate all these growers in the best practices for producing high quality medical mariijuana. There is an initiative being circulated (I 28) that will create a regulated supply system for medical marijuana and that will further increase the need to have available training for everyone involved in the system. This is one area of our economy that is booming and it is just beginning. Kudos to Stony Girl Gardens for recognizing the need and taking the first steps to make this education available. All Oregonians will benefit from marijuana farmers, doctors, and middlemen doing it right.

This stupid bimbo has been selling weed and plants for years. She has been breaking OMMP law for years. She is not allowed at some medical marijuana groups. Stoney Girl is a retired stripper who needed more spotlight and weed was the impetus.
The "university" is a joke and most cardholders cannot afford her classes. Patients are the sick & dying, not partying & frying.

Wow! I'd like to start by saying that Stoney Girl Gardens has never broken any OMMP rules. We have always given away our cuttings to cardholders for free. There are no medical marijuana groups that we are not allowed at for any reason. We work with all of the groups and are well respected among all of them for the quality of our work.

We will be included in Ed Rosenthal's Marijuana Grower's Handbook in November: Ed is considered the top expert in the world on the subject of marijuana. I'd call that accredidation.

We will be submitting a syllabus to OHSU to teach about medical marijuana as elective courses. Allow me to clarify: I have been teaching at OHSU for the last 16 years, at their invitation.

Our classes cost $25 for most classes so that patients can afford them.

I should mention that our classes are open to anyone, not just card-holders.

I am a 30+ year high risk R.N.at OHSU. Now I am attemting to inform the health care professionals in the Kaiser system. As to the realitie of cannabis. It,s use, dosing, routes of administration, effects d side effects.this while trying to educate Medical professional as to cannabiniod and, flavonoids therapeutic values and proposed therapeutic wonders of the Cannabis.
As you probably know Kaiser likes to quote the phrased coind by Nancy Reagan "JUST SAY NO. I am "trying to compile several years of research along with the increasing research now being conducted and all that will soon be starting as soon as we are able rip the cannabis plants from the hands of the feds strong grip.
Any previously compilation of material or new materials.
The better I am able to present this information to other medical professionals the better all who have to deal with Kaisers absurdities concerning this medication
Wit hopes and the strogest conviction thewill be a cannibinoid cancer cure and a proholacic way to keep awy and at bay.The teme I like to use is "TWO HIT'S A DAY KEEPS CANCER AT BAY"
