Sit/Lie: Mayor To Meet With Retailers Tomorrow

Posted by Matt Davis on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 3:33 PM

Mayor Sam Adams plans to meet with downtown retailers tomorrow morning between 8 and 10am, under Pioneer Square. I've been asking for the details of the meeting for the last nine days, ever since Adams met with advocates for the homeless to discuss possible replacements to the sit/lie law. Several phone calls, two Tweets, and a personal entreaty later, I finally got a call back just now confirming the exact(ish)location—"in one of those conference spaces under Pioneer Square." I plan to arrive five minutes early and seek out the "retail town hall," and promise to report on it. No word on whether the meeting is open to the public—it's been scheduled for a while, according to the mayor's spokesman, Roy Kaufmann. But sit/lie is likely to come up. And I'll report on what's said for your benefit—unless somebody kicks me out! Ah, Portland: City of open and transparent process, for those who really try hard enough to get invited? At 15 hours' notice...

Matt, are any of the city Commissioners planning to attend?

Not that I'm aware of. As I say, it's a meeting between Adams and the retailers that's been scheduled for a while.

Minor nuisance - panhandlers. Interestingly enough, they're *less* of a nuisance when they're sitting or lying. They aren't "aggressive" if they are sitting or lying.

Bigger nuisance - canvassers for charities. Want to make sure people avoid you on the sidewalk? Carry a binder or clipboard. They're much more aggressive than bums.
