It's PARK(ing) Day!

Posted by Sean Breslin on Fri, Sep 18, 2009 at 1:06 PM

After being dispatched from the Mercury's branch office, I headed out to see what other area park(ing spot)s looked like.

I found a classy green entryway to the Hotel Monaco:

Some folks relaxing over coffee on the 100 block of SW 3rd:

And enough hay bales to have a ho down on NW 2nd:

And I know this has already been featured, but she's just so darn cute (yes, it's a lady owl):

It's too nice a day to stay inside. Get out there and make a park!

I would be interested to know why parking day focuses on metered on-street parking--which is probably more efficient and equitable than free parking or privately owned parking. I'm confused what the message is. Are they saying people shouldn't have to pay for parking at all? Or that they don't pay enough? Or that the parking spaces shouldn't be on the street at all? (which is the same as saying parking shouldn't be public). Just asking...

I, for one, am confused on where the hell I'm going to park when I drive all the shit downtown that I'll need to build my park.

I was already fairly sure that no one in Portland works on Monday or Friday - now I know for sure.

This doesn't 'raise awareness' of shit. It's just preaching to the choir and pissing off the kinds of people you need to actually reach out to.

But at least it's done creatively rather than just having the local mad max kids sitting on the street asking for money to feed their dog.

I hope that sod doesn't go to waste.

I wonder how they moved these parks when the two hours they paid for were over ? And where did they put the sticker ?
