A Sign Of Things To Come?

Posted by Matt Davis on Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 2:02 PM

I wonder if this crack reporting is a reflection of the changes pushed for earlier this week?

I'd like the O to explain how death really works.

Part of the problem is that the Oregonian's site template places the same level of emphasis on any story they publish-- so blottery, wannabe "breaking news" like this gets stuffed at the top of the page amongst fully developed features, etc. Several other newspapers around the country use the same stupid content system they bought-- perhaps they're stuck with it for a while.

Meanwhile, it's really, truly broken. Everything's jammed into the same stream. Only a handful of stories can be viewed at any time. Sports coverage seems to have more emphasis than anything else on the page.

That said-- where's the online editor? He/she should be making sure stories are halfway developed before they're published. It's a rare oregonlive story that doesn't have a handful of comments pointing out typos, gramatical errors, etc. And lately, the columnists are replying to these comments-- defending the garbage they've shat out instead of apologizing to their readers, who sadly, have no other daily newspaper to turn to.

They might as well start using the Oregon Daily Emerald as a wire service.
