Leonard: May Kill MLS Over Paulson Remarks

Posted by Matt Davis on Thu, Oct 15, 2009 at 2:59 PM

City Commissioner Randy Leonard says he may kill Merritt Paulson's Major League Soccer deal with the City of Portland unless Paulson "recants" on remarks made Tuesday night, to the effect that Paulson won't bring Major League Soccer to Portland unless Beaverton residents give him a baseball stadium.

"He won't have a deal here," says Leonard. "I'll beat him to the punch."

Leonard, who had Paulson's public relations consultant Greg Peden in his office when I arrived to follow up on this morning's post, said "we're in the process of dealing with the communication of that message, now."

"He has a chance to recant," said Leonard. "And he better do it quick. I'm not known for being patient, and my trigger finger is itchy."

Bye bye! Paulson can take his hardball-crybaby schtick elsewhere. Good riddance!

Sometimes Commissioner Leonard can be stubborn and irritate folks and sometimes you got to love him!

If the MSL deal falls through what will happen to the UFL deal? (uh oh... was that suppose to be a secret?)

I love watching Matt Davis's hopes get built up that maybe THIS time the MLS deal will fall through only to watch them dashed as the party's figure it out.

Still not sure why you are so against this deal as it is currently constructed.

Matt don't get your hopes up this time either bud...

With Beaverton residents moving to vote on paying for a stadium, It's looking like the Beavers are gone in the Portland Metro area.

Can I reference the http://www.oregoninternationalspeedway.com as the briefest proof this sort of civic scoundrel should be mounted trophy in the smoking room of the Hatfield School of Government. Randy gets the big cigar.

"He has a chance to recant," said Leonard. "And he better do it quick. I'm not known for being patient, and my trigger finger is itchy."

Randy Leonard in leathers holding a whip in one hand and a fire hose in the other. Merritt Paulson bent over a chair with a ball in his mouth and nipple clamps.

In other words, it's just a groovy kind of love.

A race track in Boardman? Will enough fans make the commute from Hermiston to make that pencil out?

Oregonlive's Mark Larabee is reporting that Paulson said "sorry." Drama over. Leonard told him to "shut up," he says.
