Heart Coffee and Roasting Opens

Posted by Alison Hallett on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 2:12 PM

There's a hip new coffee shop in town. Heart just opened its doors at 2211 E Burnside Street (yep, that's just a few blocks from both Blend and Ruby's, and just next door to the pet store Meat). And because the ecosystem of Portland coffee shops requires that orders of hipness be quantified, let's say that it's classy hip a la Intelligentsia as opposed to cutesy hip or dirty hip (don't worry, I kind of want to stab myself for typing that sentence, too). It's actually a really nice space with big windows and beautiful dark wood floors, and there's a Random Order apple pie under glass just waiting for someone to order a slice. And bring it back to the Mercury office. For me.

I'm drinking a mocha that tastes like a latte but hell, it's day one, and at least the espresso is good. Someone who is not on deadline/trying to think of a new way to say "Jonathan Lethem blurs genre boundaries" could go drink a cup of real coffee and report back in the comments with more details, if they're so inclined. Heart does not yet exist on the internet, but I believe its hours are 7-4.

UPDATE! Hours are 7 am to 4 pm this week, and 6 am-7 pm after that.

UPDATE AGAIN! Website located.

How about "Lethem books are like that part in Psycho where you think the movie is about a detective tracking a killer, but then the detective gets stabbed in the face and you're not really sure what the movie is about anymore"

While I'm not so refined coffee drinker that I can spout off statements like, "I'm drinking a mocha that tastes like a latte," I do like coffee, and am addicted to it, and I live like a block away from there. So I shall report back in the comments..... this weekend!

How about, "Lethem novels are like taking home that cute tranny from The Tube and finding out that they're not a tranny, just a manly woman."

I believe it is "heart roasters" all lower case (or possibly just: heart). That's what the packaging on their bags of beans says.

@Graham

Yeah, if his novels were set in Portland. Thank God they're not. That was your point, wasn't it?

As promised, here's my quick review: The coffee was good. The cookies and stuff were kind. The place has a lot of light and space. Some of that space can be used for more tables. Or maybe a couch?

NOT ENOUGH WALL PLUGS. That's important. People like to use computers while at coffee shops, and plugs are key.

Amazing! A great addition to a not so amusing section of town! Excellent coffee, great muffins and the space was very well thought out! I would highly recommend checking this joint out!!!

Just bought a bag of freshly roasted ethiopian beans. They do the roasting on site which is really cool to watch but more importantly, the coffee tastes good both in the shop and in my kitchen. I heart heart.
