BEARD OF BEES
October 31
11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m.

Enter to Win!

Are you brave enough to wear a colony of 5,000 honeybees… on your face?!

Test your courage and enter for your chance to wear a Beard of Bees.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will happen on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.

To volunteer to wear a beard of bees, please email your name, phone number, and email address to rsvp@omsi.edu. Three volunteers will be selected to participate. Winners will be selected Oct. 28 and must be available for the event on Oct. 31 between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Winners will be pre-screened, must be willing to sign a waiver, and must not have previous bee allergies. (Two alternates will be selected as back-up in the event one of the original volunteers is not eligible.)

There are more details, including an explanation of how bee beards work, on the OMSI website.

Via Right Brain Resources, who sum up my feelings about the bee beard nicely: "To answer their question 'are you brave enough to wear a colony of 5,000 honeybees on your face.' F-NO! I get freaked out just walking by lavender bush."

Don't those bees have something better to do, like making honey and pollinating crops?

So one day I decided that I didn't need to wear my bee-suit while checking my hive. It was a hot day, and the bee suit make me too hot, so I'm sure my logic was good at the time. Of course, humans aren't the only things that get short tempered in the heat, bees do too, and I knew that, but whatever. Anyways, I got the hive apart and looked at it, and it looked fine, and so I put it back together. (About that time my smoker quit working, and things were going so well I didn't bother to relight it.) And the bees tend to spill out of the edges of the hive boxes, so when you are putting it back together, you have to brush them out of the way before you put the next box on, or you'll crush a few and the boxes are heavy when full, so it is slightly complicated. Anyways, I was brushing them out of the way just before I put the top box on, and one of them got mad and stung me, so I ended up dropping the box crushing quite a few and about 10 more got mad and stung me, so I decided I should go put my suit on and finish up. Except by this time the entire hive was mad at me, so a bunch of them followed me back into the house. I managed to get them to lose interest in the living room, then I took a shower so I didn't smell like angry bees, put my suit on, put the lid on the hive, and then spent an hour trapping the bees in the house and taking them back outside...

Anyways, to make a long story short, the result of that is that I itched, so I took a Benadryl, drank a beer, took a nap, (cause that is what happens when you take Benadryl with alcohol,) and then I was fine. And as long as you aren't allergic, that is pretty much all that will happen to you...

Bees are furry and that is confusing.

Kiala doesn't like to be confused.

Kiala doesn't like referring to herself in the third person.
