An Ode to the Asian Reporter.

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Goddamit, I'm admitting defeat. Whatever the Mercury tries to do that's a little bit wacky, the local Asian Reporter always, ALWAYS beats the pants off us. Yeah, we released a print version of the internet, but there's just no way we can match the Reporter's consistently idiosyncratic mix of local news, zany international stories and mind-boggling headlines.

So here, in deference to my favorite paper in town, is a small collection of Asian Reporter headlines and covers I've collected over the past several months. Keep up the good work, guys.

This weeks, for example. Not only a Nepalese midget as front page news but also the moon is marrying thousands of couples?

I like to imagine that Polo has something to do with those headlines.

Also: Blogtown needs a "Like" feature.

Interesting that Sun Myung Moon weddings are still making headlines.

I recall there once being an Asian Reporter article about a meeting of the WTO, that is the World Toilet Organization.

My favorite headline was a few years back, "Asia Fest: You had to be there!"

Fuck a description, you just had to be there, fool, and you definitely weren't.

Yeah, they had an article a while back about Cambodians who have started building shrines to Pol Pot. The person they interviewed basically said "Hey, he was a terrible dude, but he was powerful in life so he's probably like a wicked powerful ghost now."

Crazy stuff!
