Port of Portland Banned Protest Signs From Meeting Citing "Safety Hazard"

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Mon, Dec 7, 2009 at 2:10 PM

Anti-big bridge activists who tried to bring protest signs into last Friday's major Columbia River Crossing showdown received a shock at the door: a hired ABM Security guard turned away all people holding signs.

"Isn't this a public meeting?" StoptheCRC.org organizer Shannon Palermo asked the bouncer. "Public meeting, private property," replied the guard, refusing to allow in anyone who held even a small sign. In a harsh post titled "Manipulating Citizen Input and Free Speech at the CRC Meeting", Portland Planning Commissioner and transit activist Chris Smith wrote that he saw three people removed from the meeting for displaying placards.

CRC Protest Signs: unsafe at any size.

Today the Port of Portland got back to us on their policy for displaying signs during meetings: they don't have one. According to Port of Portland media relations manager, Martha Richmond, the Port has no policy on allowing or disallowing signs in public meetings.

On Friday, says Richmond, the Port directed security to "limit the number of signs" in the meeting, focusing on not allowing larger signs. "We wanted the meeting to go as [the CRC sponsors] wanted it in terms of decorum and safety," says Richmond. "We were afraid of the safety hazard of large signs in a crowded space. The security's actions may have gone beyond what we intended."

Sounds like a classic case of leadership responding to stupid and irresponsible policies with "uh, we didn't know what was going on. That's not what we told them to do...don't blame us."

The leadership made the 'limit the number of signs' rule knowing that nobody would show up with a pro-CRC sign. They might have "accidentally" forgotten to clarify what exactly they meant to security, but if I had to guess, it wasn't really an accident: the rule was made and communicated in such a way that it would most likely be enforced the way it was...

While I think the leadership should be punished for that, I also think that this says a lot about the project itself. A good project with solid political support could withstand some people with some signs showing up to the meeting. This is not one of those: The project is excessive for even Robert Moses and the political support was never that strong and is disappearing rapidly.

You deserve to be pushed around like this, you spineless peasants!!!!

Wake up, imbeciles!!! You can protest all you want. It means nothing. Go to sleep in denial, cowards. Your savior, Obama, is ruling in the same fashion that his predecessor did. Your elected officials will do as they please. What makes you think that they're there to do your bidding? The information is out there. If you choose to ignore it you deserve every bit of suffering that you have coming your way.
