Election 2010 Saltzman Rivals To Stage Joint Event Fri Night

The five candidates vying for public campaign financing to depose police commissioner Dan Saltzman plan a joint appearance this Friday night, at the corner of 11th and NE Alberta, at Dough Nation, starting at 6pm. The five candidates will each speak for five minutes, starting at 7pm, and are hoping Portlanders will show up and donate $5 to at least one of their campaigns. We'll be there to see what gets said, of course, but it'd be great to see a few Mercury readers come along with some probing questions.

The idea is Burton's, he says, because voters all have an interest in a healthy set of choices in the race. Saltzman will be invited to speak, too. We'll let you know if he deigns to show up.

Blabby - I've seen signs for 'pizza' go up there just recently, on the bit of land next to Grilled Cheese Grill that was been used as a Christmas tree lot last month. I'm guessing that's the place?

@Blabby: Burton says it's a new restaurant just starting up.
It's not a formal event so I would imagine they will answer questions from anyone who shows up. The beauty of public campaign financing is that they want your $5, so they're prepared to work hard to earn it I would hope.

The open letter I sent to this bunch of clowns, who have REALLY pissed me off !!
Dear Spencer, Mary, Jason and Jesse:
I came last Sunday to see what you had to say. While I appreciate your desire create a more "collegial" perspective among candidates, I think I made it VERY clear in the meeting that I was opposed to any scheme which would attempt to conspire to get $750,000 out of the city.
The entire reason for the Qualifying Contributions process is to see if there is genuine public support for an individual candidate to warrant PUBLIC MONEY being awarded to that individual candidate. It is NOT a scheme to just get money out of the city because a group of people are angry about an individual elected official, or a single issue.
I also made it very clear that I did NOT want the photo of me with the rest of you published until my campaign steering committee had considered and approved our participation in such a scheme. I asked your photographer to take a second set of photos of the four of you, with me not in them, and you did.
The Steering Committee of my campaign also agreed with me about this endeavor and felt equally uncomfortable with it.
Yet, before I could notify you of that decision, I get notice of my photo, with the rest of you, published in the Willamette Week (online http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2010/01/05/dan…).
What this blatant disregard for my request confirms is that my instincts were correct, and I do not wish to be publicly associated with this group, this series of endeavors, or the reactionary impetus which appears to drive your endeavors.
I am running for City Commission because I believe the city needs change. While I share your concerns about many issues, I am not interested in any conspiracies to try to manipulate the Public Financing system.
I ask you to do a public disclaimer, and ask the Willamette Week (and any other media) to remove the photo with me in it.

How does a joint event constitute a scheme to get money out of the city? Don't candidates routinely appear at the same events - debates, and so on? What a ridiculous old man.

I always thought Jesse was at least 50 from his BO pic. Jason looks normal in this but I think his campaign ad at BO is a very cheesy pic. But then, compared to this, BO is a very cheesy blog, imho.

Good God, you got to be kidding Ed. Is this the kind of behavior 21 years in South California does to a guy. Honestly, take it easy. Did your steering committee approve of your posting here. Public financing is not a scheme the way we do it in Portland. I know W. Hollywood may do it differently, is there no City Commissioner seats open in W. Hollywood. If you dont want to be associated with this "bunch of clowns", then why are you in the picture at all?

Ed, I won't be voting for you. If you didn't want to be associated with this group, why did you stand in the picture? Who knows, but you did. Now you throw a "pissed" fit in public over it?
