When God Closes Snoop Dog's Uncle's BBQ Joint, She Opens a Southeast Portland Burger Bar.

Posted by Patrick Alan Coleman on Thu, Jan 7, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Im With Snoop!
  • I'm With Snoop!

Opened recently:

Foster Burger, 5339 SE Foster Road - $7.50 burgers from Chef Mondok (recently of Sel Gris) that become increasingly expensive the more shit you add to them ($2 for fine Blue Cheese, for example).

GrÜner, 537 SW 12th Avenue - Northern European Alpine goodies, form long-time Portland chef Christopher Isreal (Zefiro, 23Hoyt, Saucebox). Any place that begins a description of flavors they'll be using with “savory” and “dill” is getting a great start in my book.

Spints Alehouse, 401 NE 28th - This place is so close to the office it's a fucking miracle I'm not there right at this very moment.

Pacific Pie Company, 609 SE Ankeny - Aussie inspired fried pies. Don't expect to see Matt Davis at this place. I believe he has something against Aussies for some reason. Maybe an Australian ate his baby.

Closing:

Greek Cuisina (yawn)
Blossoming Lotus (downtown location only)
Daphnes (greek)
Bay 13 (Pearl seafood? Douchery?)
Virgo & Pisces (blame Alison)
Lovely Hula Hands (for a new venture)
Sel Gris (maybe)

The ratio isn't too bad. But there's one more closing that will likely devastate fans of Snoop Dog and decent BBQ alike. Reo's Ribs in Aloha is closed, and is being sold off piece by piece. Reo, the owner, is Snoop Dog's uncle, and the walls of the BBQ shack were festooned with pictures of Snoop and his crew hanging out at the restaurant with a parking lot full of low riders and fly honeys. The one meal I ate at Reo's was pretty good. Michael Stern of Roadfood.com loved the stuff. But then again, I think Stern would eat anything if you coated it in BBQ sauce.

Hat tips to Food Dude on the closings and the Paralyzed Playa on Reo's

I had some good catfish there the one time I went, sorry to hear it's closing. That Virgo & Pisces place, on the other hand, sounds like good riddance.

Reo's Ribs trucks and mobile grill/bbq/smoker contraptions have been down the street from Slabtown at the corner of 27th & Vaughn in Northwest for the past few days.

If Pacific Pie is looking to make their pies authentically Australian, they will charge for their ketchup too. (Tomato Sauce).

They are open for business as we speak. Corner of NW 27th and Vaughn, as mentioned. It's in the old Vaughn Street Broiler space kitty corner from the Montgomery Park building.

Pacific Pie Co.'s pies are NOT fried!! LOL

But they ARE amazing, made by hand with the best locally sourced and fresh ingredients. As an Aussie expat I promise you they are even BETTER than our ones back home.

Top notch food - we particularly love the beef and stout, the moroccan chickpea and the spicy lentil pies as well as the OMG-they are-so-freaking-good sausage rolls.

Their pies and pasties etc. Are always a HUGE hit at our office.

Thanks to everyone above for the correction - Pacific Pie Co's aussie-style pies are baked to pastry perfection, the crust as divine as the savory fillings found within. Co-Owner Chris is authentic Australian hunk, and the pies are 100% baked perfection. Go try them out, you won't regret it!

Hah! Show me one Aussie who eats a fried pie, pls? We don't eat fried pies back home and Pacific Pie Co.'s pies are BAKED, not fried.

And as other posters mention here, Pacific Pie Co.'s food is superb! Heaps of amazing fillings to choose from. My family loves them and they have vegetarian offerings too (which my mom loves, especially the pasties!).

If you visit, be sure to also try the sausage rolls (best with tomato sauce (ketchup) on them if you want to eat 'em like we do back in Australia! But even without, they are fantastic.

And the owners - Sarah and Chris - are wonderful people!

I'm sorry, Fried Pies?? Did you actually EAT one of these pies before you wrote your 30 word sound bite? They are most definitely not fried.

The health department closed down Reo's at their new location (near Montgomery Park) shortly after they relocated. It is still closed
