Dear Local News Stations: This is How You Do It

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 9:16 AM

To Our Local News Stations:
There's a reason you're struggling to stay relevant to your diminishing viewership—and that's because you have a diminished sense of purpose! Check out the following breaking news intro from a Milwaukee station circa 1982. Every fucking thing they do has a heightened sense of purpose and urgency. Even the old guy with the clipboard is writing something that will PROBABLY SAVE YOUR LIFE. (Now, can someone please make the Mercury news team one of these promos? Preferably one that doesn't show Sarah Mirk sleeping in her office chair with an empty bowl of custard sitting on her stomach?)

I half expected the cast of Anchorman to show up at some point during that.

The local affiliates could, I dunno, attempt to be relevant too, I suppose. For instance, there is no reason for KPDX to cover a multi-car pileup in Nashville, unless they're just throwing up everything that comes over the wire from Fox, because they're unspeakably lazy.
