Need a job? Chances are decent that you do, and for once the golden doors of paid employment have opened to squeak one lucky applicant through. The position is on our all-important advertising sales team, and entails:

Job Description: Prospect new leads, contact potential clients through cold calls and drop-ins, develop relationships with business owners/managers, and educate businesses on all aspects of print and web advertising in the Mercury including choices, expectations, frequency, reaching a targeted demo, development of an effective ad campaign, and gauging the response and continued satisfaction of the client.

Experience: 1+ year in print advertising sales or related sales field. Fearless drive to succeed combined with excellent communication skills. Web advertising knowledge a plus, but not required.

Compensation: Base salary and benefits to start, plus commission and bonuses. A vehicle is required for this position.
Still interested? Send resume to: Rob Thompson. PLEASE INCLUDE a cover letter that "sells" you as the right person for the job.

Also, all prospective employees will need to be vetted by Olive the Office Pug.

Does the vehicle have to be motorized? I mean,
1) This is Portland*
2) This is the Portland Mercury**
(I agree that it would probably be difficult to do this job on TriMet+foot.)

*You can expect that people know how to get places and still look presentable in the rain/hot weather, and that people can figure out how to carry proofs on their bike. Actually, with job applicants you can't expect anything at all, but I'm saying that such people do exist, and if they have 1+ years of experience and think they can do this job on a bicycle, they probably will know that those issues would be something they need to think about...

**The places you sell ads to wouldn't be surprised if the Mercury salesperson showed up on a bicycle, you aren't looking to impress your clients with how nice your car is. And it isn't like the Oregonian where you sell ads in Salem; yes, you do sometimes have ads from the suburbs, but 90% of the advertisers are located within TriMet zones 1&2.

(Not that I'm interested in the job, I'm just asking the question.)
