This Week's Mercury Music Section

Another week, another Mercury music section to read while you watch this valiant Vanilla Ice comeback clip. "Ice Ice Baby" gets another reboot—don't forget the nu-metal version on 1998's Hard to Swallow—this time from a pair of creepy-looking British twins named Jedward. Please watch this video with great caution. It might ruin your faith in mankind.

Ben Gibbard, Jay Farrar, and Jack Kerouac? Yes, please. The Death Cabber and Sol Volter team up to break some hearts with their Big Sur-inspired collaboration. It's so much better than that one Kerouac song from the 10,000 Maniacs.
LISTEN:

Ben Gibbard & Jay Farrar - "One Fast Move Or I'm Gone"

Why does this Phoenix song sound like they are singing about "Jugalettes" (the very rare female Juggalo)? I know he is saying "jugulate," but deep down I think this French band has a soft sport for ICP fans. The French love mimes, right? Aren't Juggalos just angry tweeker mimes? Think about it.
LISTEN:

Phoenix - "Lisztomania"

Settle in to the lovely little nests of sound created by Bowerbirds. If you're hungry, they'll regurgitate some worms for you.
LISTEN:

Bowerbirds - "House Of Diamonds"

The Phosphorescent Blues of Ausin-based band Brazos. They remind me of Blind Pilot, but instead of traveling via bicycle, they tour on the backs of cattle, Texas-style. Hook 'em horns!
LISTEN:

Brazos - "Day Glo"

Plus, local music news about Akron/Family, the Infinite Front label launch, and the closure of the SPECTRE Entertainment Group.

End Hits: Still waxing chumps like candles.

But is it better than the Kerouac song by Morphine?

Good question. That was on their b-sides record, right? If it was on Cure for Pain, then Morphine would win. I miss that band.

Get off the pipe, Caraeff.

Yeah, on the b-sides comp, I believe. It's a great song, it manages to convey something of the rhythmic essence of Kerouac's writing without aping it or sounding dumb.
