This Week's Mercury Film Section.

SWAYZE MEANS BUSINESS
  • SWAYZE MEANS BUSINESS

With a staged reading of Road House: The Play taking place at Fertile Ground (and with a fully staged version of it coming in March), Portland's on the cusp of a Swayze infatuation that, I suspect, will quickly hit Chuck Norris-like levels of meme-fatigue. But tonight's your chance to get in on the Road House goodness early—tonight at the Bagdad, the 1989 classic is being presented by Cort and Fatboy and the Mercury! Get there early, 'cause I'm guessing this one's gonna be a little bit crazy.

Other films to go see this weekend:

Until the Light Takes Us: Marjorie says this documentary about Norway's dark metal scene is too surface-level to be rewarding. (Sorry, creepy Norwegian dudes.)

From Paris with Love: Ned notes, "If John Travolta stars in a movie set in France, there are really only two ways the movie can go: Either he doesn't make the 'Royale with cheese' joke, or he does." (SPOILER ALERT: He does. Twice.)

Dear John: "Why, I'll see pretty much anything!" Mercury Intern Dave Bow stupidly told me once. This should teach him to keep his fucking mouth shut.

North Face: Weirdly, the outdoor clothing manufacturer is not a sponsor of this film in which a bunch of dudes try to climb a mountain and tragically fail. Alison says it's an "undeniable nail-biter."

If none of those strike your fancy, Ma Vie en Rose is at the Fifth Avenue; the Northwest Film Center's Reel Music 27 wraps up, just in time for the Film Center's annual Portland International Film Festival to start on Thursday (look for a whole lot more on PIFF in next week's Mercury); and the Cascade Festival of African Films begins at PCC. Also, the always-fun Demons plays at Cinema 21, and—shit yes—Kill Bill, Vol. 1 hits the Laurelhurst. Because it's one of my favorite movies ever (and one of my favorite trailers, too), here's the teaser for Kill Bill—which, if I remember right, was cut back before Tarantino decided to split the movie into two parts.

And yes, Kill Bill, Vol. 2 will be at the Laurelhurst starting February 12, while Tarantino's making noises that Vol. 3 might be out in 2014.

More film, as always, in our Film Shorts and Movie Times.
