Required Viewing: Rachel Maddow on the Myth of Bipartisanship and Republican Hypocrites

Posted by Dan Savage on Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 11:45 AM

It's long, but you're going to want to watch it all the way to the end. You'll cheer and then... you'll remember that she's talking to Democrats, and so her advice—do it alone, the country needs you—won't be taken.

I'm sorry, but this woman is just as fucking annoying as Bill O'Reilly and the like and is therefore PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Maddow rocks. To equate her reasoned and verified stance with that of a blowhard nitwit like O'Reilly is absurd—unless you really aren't paying attention or are just another right-wing clown who's pissed because the facts fail to reinforce your stunted world view.

Oh I most certainly am paying attention. FYI, the LAST thing I am is right-wing, but way to make that assumption. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I am wrong. It's called an opinion. Currently I am leaning toward the opinion that you are a bit of an idiot, but not because you like Maddow. Please convince me otherwise.

Well if you're annoyed by Maddow, then here's a brilliant suggestion. Go read something instead.

@temblors: You are right, people that complain tend to be annoying. Sometimes there are things to complain about though, and if you dismiss the messenger because they don't make you "happy" then you might miss them. I, for instance, believe that if you listen to the complaints, (and act on them as necessary,) you'll be far happier in the long run, but in the short run you might have to listen to stupid and untrue complaints, (like say, the ones from O'Reilly. Although I'll admit I stopped listening to his complaints a while ago.)

But whatever you are into I guess. Have fun with your head in the sand.

Ok, troll bait aside, let me just clarify by pointing out that I originally said Maddow was annoying. I wasn't attacking the viewpoint presented in this video, or saying that her facts weren't verifiable or any such thing. I just don't really care for her way of speaking or her attitude. I personally think that for real change to happen in this country we need to move past the left wing - right wing dialectic. We need a fundamental paradigm shift. Yes, that's kind of what Maddow is getting at here, I just don't personally like the way she goes about it. Assuming that someone must be uninformed or right-wing because they don't like her is pretty ignorant in my opinion. I find left-wing moral smugness and finger pointing just as nauseating as all of the right-wing bullshit going on.

Come on folks- raise the level of discussion here. Maddow presents interesting facts- which can be checked by whomever wants to- and it is up to the viewers to check them and then make up their mind whether her info is of interest to the country. It seems to me maddow is trying to make us think for ourselves. It is not about her.

temblors,

Out of curiousity, when you say that you "just don't really care for her way of speaking or her attitude," what precisely is it that you're responding negatively to? Also, I'd be interested to know (assuming you're American and live stateside) what part of the country you're from.

Personally, I honestly don't understand how any truly reasonable-minded individual (i.e. a dialectical thinker) could object to Rachel Maddow. Passionate, sincere, honest, highly-intelligent, articulate, courteous, tough as nails. Seriously, what more could anyone ask for in a political commentator?

That thar is part of the problem. Irrational cause & effect. We desperately need to ratchet up the level of discourse and debate in this country. It is an embarrassment. We are twittering like twits while Rome burns brightly in the background. If you listened *to* Rachel, she rails against just the sort of disconnect you illuminated so beautifully in your utterly useless opinion.

Sure it does. What sort of defective citizens have we educated in this Self-Esteem Above All Else Generation that people can't admit that they made a useless point and ought to think about making a new reasoned argument defending and supporting their "opinion".

Well I do have to say that I find all of these reactions to be quite fascinating. I honestly don't mean that in a rude way. I was going to try to defend myself and further clarify but I really don't think it's necessary. I find the assumptions and speculation made about me especially interesting. I think you would be a bit shocked if you knew what kind of person you are actually dealing with here. The truth is, you don't know me and the way you have reacted says a lot more about you than it does me. I will say this though: my first statement was meant to be sarcasm, it was never meant to be taken seriously. Good night and good luck!
