In this edition of Saturday Morning Cartoon, we celebrate Valentine's Day with one of the most… umm… romantic (?) characters in animated history, Warner Bros. Pepe LePew! Today's episode marks the very first appearance of this overly amorous skunk, and it's significant for a few reasons: 1) In later episodes, Pepe chases around a female cat (named Penelope) who is accidentally painted to look like a skunk. However, in this outing his prey chooses the skunk disguise and is MALE. Homoerotica! Ooh-la-la! 2) In this incarnation, Pepe walks around on all fours instead of all the hopping he does later on. That kind of weirds me out. 3) And while Pepe's character is as rapey as ever, there's a shocking surprise ending that reveals Pepe's TRUE INDENTITY! (Trust me, after watching this, you'll never view this character in the same way again.)
Enjoy the debut of Pepe LePew in 1945's "Odor-able Kitty" (dir. Chuck Jones) and have a great Valentine's Day!
