News / Cops Jesse Jackson To Speak In Portland On Campbell Shooting Tuesday Night

- JACKSON: TO ADDRESS CAMPBELL SHOOTING IN PORTLAND, TUESDAY NIGHT
Portland OR,—Rev. Jesse Jackson will be in Portland on Tuesday, February 16 in response to the shooting death of Aaron Campbell on January 29th. Rev. Jackson will participate in a news conference at 6 PM at the Maranatha Church Fellowship Hall, entrance on NE Skidmore between NE 12th and 13th Aves. Following the news conference, Rev. Jackson will also speak at a public rally organized by the Albina Ministerial Alliance (AMA) Coalition for Justice and Police Reform, in the Maranatha Church sanctuary (12th Avenue side at Skidmore) at 6:30 PM.Aaron Campbell, an unarmed African American man, was shot and killed by a Portland police assault rifle on January 29. On February 10 a Multnomah County Grand Jury found no criminal wrongdoing by the Portland officer who shot and killed Campbell. AMA Coalition for Justice and Police Reform is urging community members to attend the rally.

About Albina Ministerial Alliance The AMA took the lead in organizing protests after the killings of Kendra James (2003) and James Jahar Perez (2004), and the tasering of 15-year-old Sir Millage (2006), and more recently in the "beanbag" shooting of a 12-year-old girl at a MAX platform (2009). They have also stood shoulder to shoulder with the Justice for Jose Mejia Poot Justice Committee (2001) and the Mental Health Association of Portland in efforts on the James Chasse case.

Storm Large was NOT in attendance. In fact, I was embarassed to be only one of a handful of non-African Americans (probably all of Irish descent) who bothered to show up. Ed Garren came, and announced his candidacy for city council. I didn't see even Matt there, although there WAS a reporter with an English accent.

I don't suppose Savage will be parachuting in for this one, either.
Face it: Portlanders aren't going to get upset about this. It's too unpleasant and difficult. Much easier to get upset about renaming a street.
I just hope the next black Portlander who suffers abuse at the hands of cops is riding a bike. Then his or her fellow citizens might give two wet shits about the situation.

Storm's singing at the Sam Adams rally made everyone cringe. That's a fact. I'm as supportive of Sam as they come and I wish I could unhear what she did at that rally.

I am wondering how long till pieces start flying off of this. Sam needs to lead, we voted for him and we have mostly overlooked the fact that he has not been the most... effective... mayor we could have asked for. Now is the time for him to step up and show us he can lead.

Jesse Jackson is just coming to grandstand and act like the clown he is. He isn't coming to help fix the problem or help the family of the "victim," he is just doing it to get his name in the press and maybe raise a few dollars to pay some alimony.

What has always amazed me about Portland is the dichotomy between the apparent ethos of the town--hip, progressive, green, dare I say liberal--and its gun-happy police force. Their job is to protect and serve, not gun down people who appear to be doing something wrong.

This is good news. Never been and and never will be a Jesse Jackson fan, but its time for the nation to examine Portland's dirty laundry. The dirtiest aspect is the non-involvement of peoples at these rallies due to the issue having a black face.
No, Storm and Dan Savage won't come, not gay enough. Cyclists won't show (although often harassed by police), not "bikey" enough. White people won't show period. Latin people won't show; not a Latino issue (or is it?) and no street name to be had. Homeless won't show, no street kids.
See how fragmented Portland is? If all of these groups would stand together against the police's excessive use of force, maybe we could all win. Instead, the self-absorption becomes evident.

Personally I would love it if Storm Large showed up. She'd have to do so in a dignified way and not try to hijack the occasion for her own publicity. But to stand up and be counted at a time like this would speak volumes to her critics, I think.

Dream on Patrick, you think a guy who sleeps with teens gives a hoot about anyone but himself? Sam is wholly unqualified to do anything so he is hanging on to this job for dear life. He will never lead or be effective and probably never would have been regardless of said scandal.

Hopefully, anyone and everyone who has a beef with the Portland police will show. Its not about race its about death. To the Portland Police's credit, they do appear to be equal opportunity offenders. They've killed people of various creeds and colors. Age isn't even a barrier, doling out the violence at protests here in Portland to grannies.
This deserves national attention and so does the mayor and our city. Coupled with educational cuts, high unemployment, foodlessness and homelessness..
Maybe Portland is the micro to the macro in America after all?

I wouldn't mind Storm showing up as long as she promises not to sing or howl or whatever you call that.

I would rather pop zits on my back than to listen to Jesse Jackson or any of those other grand standers shoot their mouth off.
