Kitzhaber Poll Shows Strong Lead

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 12:11 PM

The Kitzhaber for Governor campaign just released a new poll that shows him far ahead of Al Gore's buddy Bill Bradbury in the race to the Oregon primary:

Ouch. More details on the poll below the cut. Update 2:51 pm: Plus a response from the Bradbury campaign. They say this poll is actually good news for them.

Bradbury was clearly more progressive on green issues when I talked with both candidates about their environmental agenda last month. But Kitzhaber definitely has strong support in the state.

From JK's campaign:

The poll was conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates for the Kitzhaber campaign and sampled 554 likely Democratic primary voters in Oregon. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.2% at the 95 percent confidence level...

Fully 69 percent of Democratic primary voters view Kitzhaber favorably, including 41 percent who say their view of him is “very favorable.” Fewer than one in five Democratic primary voters (16 percent) have an unfavorable view of Kitzhaber. Bradbury is also well regarded, with 54 percent having a favorable perception and 13 percent unfavorable.

But Bradbury is less well-known to voters, and only one-quarter (25 percent) have a “very
favorable” view of him.

So can Bradbury swing thirty percent of voters before May rolls around?

UPDATE: Bradbury's campaign says this poll is actually good news for them. From campaign spokesman Jeremy Wright, who believes Bradbury's name recognition has risen in the past two weeks thanks to appearances at the Willamette Woma's Democrat Forum, Howard Dean's endorsement and an appearance on KPOJ:

This Kitzhaber poll is actually good news for our campaign. For a two term Democratic Governor to be polling barely over 50% in his own party shows a real weakness and an opportunity for us to get our message out that Bill Bradbury is THE democratic candidate in the race.

Frankly, this tells us what we already know, that John Kitzhaber is the establishment candidate in the race with a high name ID.

Come on, we already had Kitzhaber as Governor for two terms. Bill Bradbury is very progressive, smart, and he wants to start a Bank of Oregon to keep our money local. What are you thinking people? What are you thinking? Bill Bradbury for Governor!

If Bill Bradbury had a different campaign manager, I might think about voting for him.

Based on this poll, I'm predicting that Bill Bradbury will win the Democratic nominee!

the poll was taken from currently registered Democratic voters. Before the April deadline, there will be a lot of independents, Greens, and even Republicans that will be switching to vote in the May primary as Democrats. Oregon's 100,000 medical marijuana community is an emerging, powerful voting block that will sway this primary because of the community's outraged at John Kitzhaber over his derogatory remarks about supporters of the OMMA in 1998, calling them "mindless dopers!" Okay, maybe a few, but mostly they're active, and they remember, despite rumors to the contrary, and they're still pissed at being betrayed by then Governor Kitzhaber-

So, they're not Democrats at the moment, but the state-wide plan is to register by April 27th and vote to keep Kitzhaber out.

Personally, I think Bill Bradbury is a great progressive, starting a state bank and fighting to keep the initiative process alive for us while he was Secretary of State. On the other hand, we know Kitzhaber is a shill for the pharmaceutical and insurance industries, where he gets most of his money.

All this poll shows is that voters are more familiar with the Kitzhaber name. When it comes to substantive issues, however, Bradbury has shown a willingness to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to the challenges we face as a state. Personally, I won't vote for someone because of a sense of nostalgia. I'd rather vote for the candidate with the best ideas and the ability to put those ideas into action.
