Tecmo Bowl Returns This Spring

The classic Tecmo Bowl football series is being revived for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network with this Spring's release of Tecmo Bowl Throwback.

The bad news? Despite inevitable claims to the contrary, Bo Jackson knows nothing about any of this.

The good news? All the rad additions Tecmo promises past the jump.

From this morning's official press release:

Features:

* Online Multiplayer: Find your old buddies online and challenge them to matches just like back in the day
* 2D + 3D Graphics: Experience all new 3D graphics with the ability to switch to the classic 2D style!
* Customizable Teams and Rosters: Play as any of the 32 teams with customizable team names and rosters in full seasons
* Online Leaderboards: Compare your stats in a wide array of online leaderboards
* Classic Game Modes: Battle it out with your friends and kick off a game in Preseason, Season or Pro Bowl modes

The publisher also sent over a handful of screenshots. They don't look wildly impressive, but they do manage to capture the style of the original game with a few modern tricks.

Have a look:

And in case Throwback's lack of pixels rubs you the wrong way, the update also includes an old school graphics filter:

There's no official release date yet, aside from a typically vague "Spring 2010," but based on all the information available, I feel safe in saying Tecmo Bowl Throwback isn't too far off.

Now let's just keep our fingers crossed for a sub-$10 price tag. Anything else will be Tecmo shooting itself in the foot.

Can I still play as Don "The Magic Man" Majkowski?

I wonder if they don't have the rights anymore to call it Tecmo "Super" Bowl.
That was the true apex of football video games, everything else is just a imitating it.
I also wonder if the tecmo-shuffle will still be the most efficient way to score when you break into the open. Can't wait!

Is the punt rush defense still virtually unbeatable?

Customizable rosters? I'm naming mine after Final Fantasy. Can't wait til Yuffie sacks Elway.

Like most things of the era Rusty, the "Super" was more an indication that it was a sequel to the original Tecmo Bowl, so I don't think the name has anything to do with the NFL's crazy vice-like grip on the word.
