The line outside downtown's Voodoo Doughnuts yesterday stretched down the block and around the corner. Voodoo's bacon maple bar—what everyone was lined up for—is the Beanie Baby of deep-fried dough. A limited supply creates a perception of scarcity which stokes demand... and stupidity. Don't get me wrong: the doughnuts at Voodoo are awesome and my boyfriend requires bacon maple bars. But no doughnut is worth standing in line for an hour or more. And what is it with Americans and sugar anyway? About the only things we'll wait in a Soviet-era-Russians-lined-up-for-toilet-paper style lines for are doughnuts and cupcakes. You would think doughnuts and cupcakes were hard to come by in the USA instead of hard to avoid.
