Oregon's A Small State: Fill In The Blanks

Posted by Matt Davis on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 3:04 PM

Anna Griffin's column last week used Saltzmangate as an opportunity to highlight what a small state Oregon is in terms of people having relationships within the political community:

Ponder this family tree and see if you don't feel dizzy: Saltzman's chief of staff, Brendan Finn, recently began dating Karol Collymore, a candidate for Multnomah County commission. Before her campaign, Collymore worked for Jeff Cogen, who used to be Saltzman's chief of staff. Interim Multnomah Chairman Jeff Cogen, whose empty seat she's running to fill. Cogen used to be Saltzman's chief of staff, and his wife runs the children's levy, Saltzman's baby.

There's, nothing wrong with finding love at work. Portland needs committed young do-gooders like Finn and Collymore, the kind of people who work too hard for actual social lives. But the connections I'm talking about aren't just romantic: Three of the five City Council members share the same political consultant, Mark Wiener, who also works with Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Kitzhaber and Attorney General John Kroger. Such ties are perfectly legal. But they aren't always harmless when it comes to how the public perceives government.

Good work, Anna. But cartoonist Jack Ohman went a little further this weekend, drawing a cartoon of connections between major Oregon politicos.

Since we're getting into it, I decided to have a lame go at filling in the blanks. Update, 4:10: Thanks to everyone who emailed or called in with the rest of the answers. That didn't take long! Here's the finished diagram:
