Explode Into Colors Break Up

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Explode into Colors is breaking up. The band has yet to release a formal statement on the matter, but their final performance will be their June 5th show at Rotture (coincidentally our 10th anniversary party—but don't blame us, it's not our fault).

In their brief yet triumphant run, XIC quickly became one of the most popular bands in Portland (and beyond), a remarkable feat considering that the trio of Claudia Meza, Lisa Schonberg, and Heather Treadway never released a full-length recording.

End Hits: We're not okay with this.

I'm pretty okay with this.
The clubs of Portland are now dolphin vocal free.

Boy, I do love the Mercury!

Explode into Colors one of the most popular bands in Portland? Not to mention, "beyond", whatever the fuck that means!

Newsflash--you and yr friends and hip 20something house party goers may have loved this band, but that is hardly everyone in the city. In fact, I'd say that 9 out of 10 people in the city, if not more, have no idea this band ever existed.

As for beyond...

@jake: Well, NME named 'em one of the top ten bands of SXSW last year.

And I would posit that hip 20 (and 30) something house party goers does encompass an awful lot of the city...

is the quality of music now all the sudden decided by the fact that 9 out of 10 people in the city know that they exist?

wow. been living in the dark! thanks!

That's too bad, I liked that band.

Not normally the sorta style of music I listen to, but they did what they did exceedingly well, and I can totally see why a lotta people around Portland liked 'em.

@jake not to mention they were Willamette Week's "Best New Band of 2009."

So clearly they have a pretty good following in Portland.

It's funny.

It's not even about the band--they were OK. I just think it would be a little more accurate to have described them as the most popular band "among me and all my friends" or "among a certain demographic." Seems people in the city tend to live in bubbles--what's happening in their world must mean "everyone". Considering 1/3-1/4 of the city is east of 82nd, you think there are loads of Explode Into Colors fans there?

@ Jake re: 1/3 of pop. east of 82nd,

I like to think I'm as sensitive and caring as the next person, but fuck those people.

Jeezus jake, relax and get a life. Or a legit platform for your so-called authority. It's NOT funny, actually.

@TweenDream Whoa, maybe they aren't playing an all ages shows because of aggro dicks like you?

They offered a sound that stood out from the rest of Portland's music scene... unique, minimal, and unpretentious. You haters can go ahead and hate ... go throw on a Decemberists record and wax your mustache ... you'll feel better.

MonkeyBeat stole my comment. Terrible Band. Almost considered skipping the Raincoats just to avoid their harsh poseur vibes.
