Portland, OR.: Beer City, USA

Posted by Patrick Alan Coleman on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 1:00 PM

People seem to be pretty worked up about making sure Portland beats Asheville, NC, for “Beer City, USA” in this poll.

Normally I wouldn’t be concerned about something from the Examiner. But Asheville, NC? We’ve got to take them down. We’ve got more "beer city" in the backwash at the bottom of our pint glasses than can be found in all of their pubs and breweries.

So, go… Vote.

As long as we beat Seattle and SF, that's all I care about.

Oh yeah, good point, Colin.

Our beer SUCKS! I'd rather drink Olympia!

Everyone in Portland drinks Rainier tallboys because Portland has NO good beer! Move to Seattle and get some of their artistic culture and down-to-earth style!

Our beer here is terrible. They use these green pods called "hops" that make it bitter and undrinkable.

(Psst - Colin does that help?)

Portland is ranked as one of the drunkest cities in the U.S. and also has the most strip clubs per capita. There is little regulation in Oregon when it comes to drinking and partying. I wouldn't be so proud of that!

Have you even BEEN to Asheville? Seriously, man. You have NO IDEA. The quality & variety of the beer there is unparalleled.

Green Man...
Pisgah...
Highland...

Buy a plane ticket and come educate yourself.

...of course, I haven't been to Portland EITHER. But I am looking forward to it one of these days to visit Stumptown.

Asheville takes its beer _very_ seriously. I've never seen anything like it.

Tour buses actively encourage passengers to pick up bottles beer and drink during the ride, the dumpiest gas stations have better beer selection than most Portland grocery stores, and when you get a haircut - most barbers offer a free pint of local brew.

I'm not disparaging Portland's excellent beer scene. But Asheville takes it to a whole new level.

Mr. Coleman is speaking from a space of ignorance.

The Asheville Beer Scene sucks. Sucks, sucks, sucks.

Even if you prefer Portland's beer scene to Asheville's, the lack of sophistication found in some of these comments leads one to "consider the source."

Greetings from Asheville.
It's very cute that you have chosen this particular windmill to tilt at but it's probably for the best if the urine-like swill you in Portland call beer remains untasted by the rest of the world.
Besides, you already hold the title of Meth City, USA.
Can't you just be happy with that?

portland might have great beer and lots of it...but it's 10 times the size of asheville, and the fact that asheville can even contest says a lot...much less win! (i'm from asheville but live in portland...i get it, both cities have lots of great beer.)
