"When are people going to stop getting fired?"

Posted by Dan Savage on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 9:44 AM

Dan Choi on this week's DADT "compromise."

He's not satisfied. GetEQUAL is not satisfied. And the protests continue.

GetEQUAL co-founder Kip Williams was arrested for shouting at President Barack Obama in San Francisco last night. Obama was speaking at a fundraiser for U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer at the Fairmont Hotel. Williams said he yelled at Obama because the latest plans for Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal are inadequate... Williams was cited for disturbing the peace and then released.

"It was the first time I've done something like that by myself," he said. "I was close enough to see Obama's face. I worked so hard on his campaign and I still believe in him and I support him and I wish I didn't have to have that exchange with him and I saw the anger on his face when I started speaking, but I'm angry too, and I can't be silent."

And Rachel Maddow doesn't sound exactly satisfied either...

This push back from DADT activists will probably help get Obama's compromise on DADT through Congress. Their unhappiness with the compromise allows the president and the Dems to claim that they're not caving or pandering to "extremists" on pro-repeal/pro-justice side of the DADT issue. "Look," they can say, "that crazy guy who keeps chaining himself to the fence at the White House is still pissed, and these nuts are still shouting at the president." It may already be paying dividends.
